Handyman hints: Window shopping - February 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

For the next few weeks we're going to be talking windows, both for replacement and new home construction.

Why replace a window? Because there's so much condensation in between the panes you can't tell whether a fog has rolled in, or you're the victim of the first June snowstorm in your lifetime. Or, you're required to detour around the window in order to avoid the chilling draft, or because it makes funny noises every time you tug it open.

Having to tug it open (the procedure shouldn't qualify as the third challenge on an ultimate fitness test), or maybe the sill's rotting. Maybe it's been painted shut so long you've forgotten what a southern breeze feels like.

Or, maybe it's just too damned old, and after 30 years, it's about time you replace that tired looking, stubborn pain in the butt (we're still talking windows). That's why we renovate.

Before we discuss your choices, you'll need to decide whether you're going to be replacing the entire window, frame and all, or simply removing the "sash". The sash is the moving part of the window that holds the glass panel in position.

Removing the sash is the most basic form of window replacement because you're simply eliminating the moving parts, creating a hole within the existing frame that will accept what's referred to as an "insert". An insert is a standard sash with a very basic, narrow frame, often requiring little more than a 1/4 round molding and a bead of caulking in order to seal the seam between new and old frames.

The insert strategy is the least expensive manor of window replacement because you're saving hours in installation labor, while eliminating the need for brick moldings and jamb extensions, relatively expensive options that would most likely be necessary if you were replacing the entire unit. However, window inserts do nothing to cure issues relating to decaying or crooked sills, or drafts due to old and poorly insulated frames.

Plus, if you were looking to update the home, and were considering a pebble, wicker, or even black color of exterior window finish, as opposed to the traditional white, an insert will require your installer having to cap the old frame in aluminum.

Which is still a very doable procedure, but at this point, and expense, you're probably better to replace the whole window.

Next, choose a style, relating to the window's manner of operation.

'I could have been killed': Passenger's terror after thugs smash bus window - February 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    23 Feb 2014 14:42

Amanda Newham said she would have been seriously injured or died when a large hole was smashed through the window in the attack on Queen's Road, Cheetham Hill

A woman says she could have been killed after she was showered with glass when a window was smashed on a bus.

Amanda Newham, 25, was travelling home from work when yobs either threw something through the window or fired at it with a pellet gun.

The object caused a huge hole in the window and Amanda was hit by shards of glass.

She was taken to hospital but released later the same day.

Amanda, from Radcliffe, was on a Metrolink replacement bus service when the attack happened on Queen's Road at its junction with Woodlands Road in Cheetham Hill on Friday night.

The pensions administrator said: All of a sudden there was glass hitting me in the face.

I thought somebody had smashed a glass bottle on the bus but then I saw the huge hole in the window.

The impact gave me a huge knock.

Wearin' of the green - February 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

This tale begins in September with a sales call from a company dealing in siding and replacement windows.

My house is brick, so my need for siding is pretty limited nonexistent, actually but I did have some interest in windows to swap out for the ones installed in 1956, when the new-new house was built.

Yes, I know that's hardly new-new, but it's the youngest house I've ever lived in in fact, the only house that's been younger than I am.

In answer to the quick window sales pitch, I asked what I always ask (I get these calls about every three months): "Are they available in green?"

The trim on my house is dark green.

I went to a lot of trouble to make it that way, and I'm not going back.

If you want window sash in white or brown vinyl, believe me, you can get it from anyone. Green? Not so much.

The question, as usual, brought the saleswoman up short, but she said she'd check with her supervisor something I've also heard many times before.

The supervisor called the next day with the startling news that, yes, his company could get windows in dark green, but it would take a few weeks longer.

Like that mattered. I've been waiting years for someone to wake up to the fact that not all window sash is white.

Geothermal heat pump nets savings, comfort - February 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Dear Jim: I should replace my old heating and cooling system with a more efficient one. Is installing a geothermal heat pump wise and what types are best? Shel K.

Dear Shel: Making the significant investment in installing a geothermal heat pump does make sense. Keep in mind, a geothermal heat pump also becomes the most efficient central air-conditioning system during summer and provides free water heating.

I just replaced my old heat pump with a WaterFurnace 7-Series geothermal heat pump in my own home. Even though the overall installed cost is higher than other systems, it will pay back its cost in savings and the comfort level is excellent. Also, if one is installed by 2016, there is a 30 percent federal tax credit on the total cost.

I chose this WaterFurnace model because of its super-high heating and cooling efficiencies. It has a heating efficiency COP (coefficient of performance) of 5.3. Using the constant temperature underground, it produces more than $5 worth of heat for each $1 on my utility bill.

When cooling during summer, the energy efficiency ratio, known as EER, is as high as 41. This is more than twice as efficient as the best new standard heat pumps and central air conditioners. Instead of the heat from the house being exhausted through the outdoor condenser unit, it goes into the water heater for free heat.

For most homes, several 5-inch diameter holes are drilled about 150 feet deep for the tubing to use the earths heat. This is called a vertical loop. I have a large backyard, so I installed a long horizontal, 5-foot-deep loop. The loop replaces the outdoor condenser unit so there is no noise to bother neighbors. The indoor compressor is quiet.

The 7-Series model, because it uses a special variable-output compressor, fine tunes the heating and cooling output to the instantaneous needs of the house. This is the most expensive system design, but it provides the best savings and year-round comfort. The installation cost of the ground loop is the same no matter what geothermal system you install.

By constantly varying the output, it runs in more efficient slower, quieter cycles and the air from the register feels hot. A common complaint for standard heat pumps is it never feels warm.

The energy-guzzling backup resistance heating seldom, if ever, comes on. During very hot weather, the compressor can run in super-cooling mode to produce an extra 20 percent output.

The next step down in comfort and efficiency is a model with a two-stage compressor. Most of the time, it runs at the lower-output speed. When it cannot heat or cool your house to the thermostat setting, it automatically switches to the higher speed for more output. Its energy efficiency ratio is as high as 30.
