Bids received for work at MSP -
February 25, 2014 by
Mr HomeBuilder
All work has now been bid for renovations and remediation at the old Missouri State Penitentiary, and officials still are planning on resuming public tours this spring.
The state recently received bids for cleanup and roof replacements, and Ryan Burns, spokesperson with the Missouri Office of Administration, said contracts should be awarded this month.
Late last year, the city agreed to split with the state the estimated $2 million cost of repairs and mold remediation at MSP, in exchange for a long-term contract with the Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau, or CVB, for use of the facility.
At the end of September, the CVB temporarily suspended all tours of the historic prison site, only to later announce the cancellation of all 2013 tours because of mold found at the site.
Officials previously stated the goal is to reopen the prison by April, in time for the 2014 tour season.
The state received three bids for interior cleanup and repairs on Housing Units 1, 3, 4 and the gas chamber:
Asbestos Removal Services Inc. of Holts Summit, $536,000
LVI Environmental Services Inc. of Shawnee, Okla., $1,375,000
Midwest Asbestos Abatement of St. Peters, $715,440
The state estimate for the cost of interior cleanup and repairs was $939,283.

A local design and remodeling business in our area is being recognized nationally for its customer service, something contractors often strive for but don't always receive.
The Irwins in Pittsford knew it was time to update their 1970's-style bathroom. So they turned to Oasis Design and Remodeling. Paula Farinella does the design work and John Spock the construction work. The two teamed up about five years ago.
"He had been in construction for about 30 years," Farinella said. "We felt that maybe bringing that design element into his business would be advantageous."
"A lot of people see these TV shows and there's a lot of design stuff going on and we felt that bringing that design element in would help the trend," Spock said.
Paula sits down with customers to first do the floor plans and layouts, then helps pick out all the materials. She says she's kind of the guide, walking everyone through the process, something she says not all contractors can offer. And unlike larger design centers, Paula says with their three-person operation, you always know who and what you're going to get.
"Here the owner of the company is here everyday," Farinella said.
John says being on site helps connect them to customers and give them what they want. He says that's what helped them win the "Best of Houzz" in the Customer Satisfaction category. Houzz is an online site with thousands of ideas on how to build, remodel and design a home.
"We don't advertise. All our business is word of mouth," Spock said.
John admits he's not the cheapest guy around, but he stands by his work. And his client base shows that. They're booked for the next six months.
A few years ago he brought on Joe as a full time employee and subcontractors to help with bigger jobs. He expects to grow in the coming years but grow with caution.

The Sanctuary settling into new home -
February 25, 2014 by
Mr HomeBuilder
MORGAN COUNTY More than a decade of dreams, plans and prayers have paid off for the members of The Sanctuary church.
The new building for which they had been raising money and saving up is now a reality on The Sanctuary campus west of Fort Morgan along Highway 34.
"The big push was to get in by Christmas," Pastor Gary Meadows said. "We weren't sure we'd make it after it blew down, but we made it."
Construction suffered a pretty big setback last summer, when extremely high winds one day in August literally blew down the building's wooden frame.
But the contractors and volunteers got it built back up, and work continued to get the building ready for a big church celebration at Christmas, Meadows said.
"All the contractors did excellent work," he said. "A lot of people gave generous donations of time and materials."
Their efforts are more than just what shows in the final product, though. Some of their prayers and thoughts became part of the building's structure, Meadows said.
"As this building was erected, we had folks write scripture on the studs, and on the boards under the carpet," he explained.
Parts of the building that were finished earlier were rented out at times, including to Centennial Mental Health Centers for a training. Among those who went to that was a grieving grandfather whose baby grandchild had been stillborn. Meadows said he wrote a long Hebrew verse on the door frame for the cry room in the back of the new church's main auditorium.
"Now, he called me back and they will be back for another training," Meadows said. "He wants to furnish the cry room."
