Bid accepted for High School roof work - February 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Shelbyville School Board approved the recommendation by the districts architect for the roofing project on the high school during its regular meeting February 20.

Bid opening was held February 14 with nine bids submitted. The project include roof replacement on the high school gym and auditorium.

The districts architect Bill VanDusen of Allied Design Consultants told the board that if defects were revealed, the 10 percent contingency would be in the Life Safety contract.

This is a 1980s roofing. Its time to replace it and the timing was good for competitive bids, VanDusen said.

The low bid was Top Quality Roofing Company of Mt. Zion at $269,000. Estimated cost was $338,000. The board approved and signed the contract to get the project started. Work is expected to start after school is out June 2 with an anticipated completion date of August 15.

In administrative reports, Superintendent Denise Bence noted that nine snow days have been declared so three of the days will be submitted to the state as act of God days.

She reported that public forums, radio spots, and TV interviews are being used to inform the public on the Shelby County sales tax referendum.

Bence added that she will be applying for a $50,000 maintenance grant, which will require a matching $50,000 from the districts funds, and recommended that, if awarded, the money be used for replacing exterior doors. Estimated cost for all doors is $140,000. The board approved the application.

Bence also reported that damage from the storm earlier that day tore the roof off the press box, pushed the band trailer into the concession stand, damaging the roof of the stand; blew out a window in the high school, and damaged bleachers at the baseball field north of Moulton school. She added that she has already contacted the insurance company, noting that premiums went up after the claim on the Main Street School chimney that was damaged by lightning a few years ago.

Moulton Middle School principal Russ Tomblin noted that ISAT testing will be held the first week of March. He added that as a result of last years test results that Shelbyville ranked 5th out of 40 area schools.

Columbiana BOE hears proposals for roof - February 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

COLUMBIANA The Columbiana Board of Education will soon be taking the next step with regards to the roof over South Side Middle School.

During a special meeting Thursday the board heard presentations from two manufacturers and one local roofing company representing a manufacturer.

The manufacturers are on a state bidding system and estimates range from $300,000 to $750,000.

The companies all offer 20-year warranties, although specifics of those warranties differ. If approved by the board, the district will contract with the manufacturer, which will then hire contractors for the work.

The local roofing company, Boak and Sons, already has a maintenance contract with the district and presented on behalf of Duro-Last, a manufacturer of prefabricated roofing systems.

"It looks like you guys are just fighting it tooth and nail," Boak employee Chris White said of the roof's leaking that has caused damage to insulation and ceiling tiles in classrooms and hallways.

The damage has resulted in the district opting to move students out of the 1962 edition to the 1969 edition of the school and even Joshua Dixon Elementary on the other side of town.

The district is hoping to have the roof replaced before the next school year in order to have students back in the middle school. The board was originally hoping to replace the flat roof with a pitched roof using tax revenue generated from a 29-year bond issue, but the bond has been rejected by voters three times since 2012.

A pitched roof has been estimated at upwards of $1 million while a flat roof is significantly less, and money for the new flat roof is coming out of the general fund.

White said in addition to the "extensive history of leaks," the 45,000-square-foot roof over the 50-year-old structure has "severe blistering" of the surface and widespread splits throughout.

TESDA inks MOA with Zobel Foundation for construction of Voc-Tech center - February 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

MANILA Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) Secretary and Director General Joel Villanueva and E. Zobel Foundation Inc. chairman of the board Dee Anne Hora- Zobel on Friday signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) for a technical vocational training center in Batangas province.

Villanueva said the ENZO Tech in Calatagan will be the newest learning hub for youth in technical skills development, proper values and ethics to meet the growing job market demand.

The building is designed to be eco friendly, well ventilated using solar energy to generate power and local materials like bamboos and others.

The initial courses to be offered about 120 students are transport servicing courses on automotive mechanic, motorcycle small engine servicing, shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), building wiring installation, home/industrial technology servicing in refrigerator,/ aircon repair servicing, cellphone repair servicing and computer servicing.
