Step 2: Front walkway and driveway fix – materials delivered … - November 29, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Egad, does anyone else hate the way the blogs were improved? The best part of reading blogs was that you could scroll down quickly to see if there was anything interesting to read. For me it was like walking through a book store and stumbling upon an interesting aisle of books. Now its like the bookstore is a long hallway with a series of doors and you have to open each door to see if thats an aisle you want to visit. I dont much like it but at least we can read blogs on our ipads and phones now (p.s. can we all stop saying smartphones, its like saying the World Wide Web. Just say phones. Anyone who has an old flip phone knows that cool stuff doesnt apply to them). That was a long overdue issue. So I guess the new and improved was the only way to accomplish this. Id better start thinking of some snappy titles and my first two sentences better kill if Im going to keep my readership.

So in my last post you were able to see why we need to put some driveway edging in and why we need to add walkways to the 2 front doors (youll have to click the words Read Moreto actually see any photos). So heres what I ordered:

    1. Walkways Nittenhouse slate pads (in Appalachian Gray) in the 2424 and 1224 sizes from Zappala Block in Rensselaer (these look like bluestone but are really concrete. If anyone asks, its real bluestone). They are about an inch thick so they should last. These come in different colors but I was outvoted on mixing colors (it will look too patio-ish) and it wasnt a battle worth fighting.

    2. Edging Versalok standard caps (in Pebble color) from Colonie Block in Colonie. This is a bit of an unorthodox use. These blocks are supposed to be used as the cap on a wall. Were burying them standing since they are 12 x16. We will put them about 10 inches into the ground so there will be a clear delineation between driveway and yard. Right now its a bad transition with the yard taking over the driveway.

    3. Stone dust got 2 loads of this from Colonie Block. Some of this will be used for the driveway and some for the walkways.

    4. Driveway gravel Ill share what kind I used after the job is done. Im getting it from Troy Sand and Gravel. They have a bunch of types and Im hoping this stuff looks nice. I drove over there last week and ended up driving into the facility where cars arent allowed. A worker who swore alot showed me some samples (it was hilarious). Im getting 3 loads of that gravel to repair the driveway.

    5. Mini Excavator (its got heat)- renting this for 3 days from Country True Value in East Greenbush. They will rent just about anything. I asked if it made that annoying beeping everytime it goes into reverse and they said yes. Gulp. My neighbors are going to hate me by Thursday.

So check out the photos are report back here next week. Were starting the work tomorrow.

Termite Inspection & Control Methods – Termite Prevention … - November 29, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Termite Part of the Termitoidae family

    Termites

Overview: Termites consist of thousands of different species of insects that feed on dead organic material. They most commonly feed on wood, and they are most widely known for causing structural damage to wooden buildings and also causing significant harm to crops and other forms of vegetation.

Latin Name: Part of the Termitoidae family

    Description:

Termites are only distantly related to ants, but share many similarities. Termites are often confused with flying ants because they look very similarly to one another. Both are brown in color, approximately one centimeter in length, and have long slender bodies, large wings, three pairs of legs, and antennae. However, unlike the ant, the termite does not have an abdomen, the head is more round, and the antennae are straight instead of elbowed.

Also like the ant, termites live in large colonies where they operate within a hierarchical system. There are workers, soldiers, and queen termites. However, the duties of a termite are different from the ant. The termites role in nature is to work within their colonies to destroy and break down organic material.

Termites are one of the most reviled and feared types of pests because they are capable of causing large amounts of costly damage. These insects are able to so much damage because they can infest and multiply within a crop or a home to very large sizes before they are ever detected. If regular termites inspections or prevention measures are not in place, termites can cause widespread structural destruction before they are noticed.

These insects tend to thrive in warmer climates, and are most active in North America during springtime. However, as there are roughly 3,000 different species of termite, there are varieties that can live and grow in nearly any region. The different types of termite will live in different materials and feed on different sources. There are subterranean termites that prefer to live in mounds of soil, while there are other species that will live inside the drywall of a building, destroying the structure from the inside out. These pests can obviously cause major problems for humans.

Residential Backyard Ponds – Design and Install in Alberta … - November 29, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Some residential backyard ponds that have been designed and installed in Alberta are truly spectacular during the day as well as the evening. Just take a look at this picture on the left and imagine a pond with water falls and mountain streams like this in your outdoor space. Add night time lighting to it and you have a truly spectacular water feature designed to impress your guests no matter what time of the day! This particular landscape incorporates three water falls and two ponds with lots of Alberta boulders and plants strategically placed. And then the lighting really sets it off during the evening providing a wonderful landscape to admire. Humans love it, birds love it and the animals love it. It can be a wonderful place to sit and enjoy the quiet solitude of your outdoor space listening to the tranquil water falls. It is a perfect conversation piece when guests come for dinner. There will never be a lull in topics to discuss. It does not get much better than that!

How Do You Design One of These

It is really quite easy, however it does take some time to come up with a design that you can truly appreciate. You go to the experts who have designed many backyard ponds for residential customers as well as commercial customers. You may have ideas of your own that you want to incorporate. That is fine with the designers, in fact they prefer that the customer is an integral part of the design process. It really helps to make sure that the customer is truly satisfied with the final result. There is even more pride of ownership, when you can can say I helped to design this beautiful water pond, water falls and mountain stream!

Start with the pictures and pick out a number that you think you may like. Next look at the packages that are available to confirm that they are within the price range you were thinking of spending. Next, call the number at the top of the page to arrange for a consultation at your home or business. Let the designer know over the phone what landscapes you have shortlisted and what your budget is. They can then bring along some more pictures that fit your requirements and be prepared to discuss in detail what kinds of ponds and water features would best fit your outdoor space. They will work with you to narrow down the choices and select something that will look truly spectacular in your yard and within budget.

    Maintaining a Pond

Maintaining a pond like the one in the picture does take a bit more work than a smaller one, however with water level monitors and automatic fillers, you will not need to be concerned about the water getting too low. From time to time, someone needs to monitor the chemical makeup of the water to ensure that the PH level is in the correct range for plants and fish if you have them.

Any debris from storms and wind should be removed immediately to maintain the flow of water and of course to keep your water feature looking pristine. Most home owners will look after this part of the maintenance. They can also test the water as well once a month or more often if there is some concern. Often the PH levels will change after a lot of rain. Customers can also arrange for one our contractors to come once a month to ensure that everything is running smoothly, clean up anything that needs to be done and re-arrange plants or thin them out as needed.

During the winter time your water feature will need to be shut down, since freezing water can damage the pipes and the pumps. These will be removed and the water will be lowered if needed. An aerator can be added to the pond if you have fish in the pond. They hibernate, but they do need unfrozen water with oxygen so the aerator will keep the water from freezing and also pump in air into the water as well.

    Design and Install in Alberta

There are literally thousands of designs to choose from. Not all of them will make sense or would look very good in your outdoor space. But many of them will. Our customers often like to have something that is unique and customized that fits their space, their sense of spectacular and their budget. A custom designed backyard pond can be designed and installed making use of some of the features you have seen in other ponds with your own customized requirements included.

Swimming Pool Landscaping – Landscaping Ideas – Landscape … - November 29, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Swimming pool landscaping requirements share certain goals with other areas of your landscape design, but there's an important difference in emphasis. As with other areas of the yard, you want a "poolscape" to be safe, private and low-maintenance. But the significance of each of these goals is accentuated by the poolscape's unique nature.

Landscaping Around Swimming Pools Swimming pool landscaping is a challenge, because so many factors come into play. Swimming pool landscaping should provide beauty, yes. But more practical considerations start with safety and convenience. To screen out prying eyes, you'll also want your poolscape to offer privacy.

Pool Decks, Decking Around Spas What choices do you have in materials for building pool decks? Well, that depends on the swimming pool. Do you have an above-ground pool? Then, typically, your building material for a deck will be wood. For in-ground structures you have more options: pavers, concrete and stone.

Swimming Pool Safety Swimming pools can provide hours of backyard fun but can also be dangerous. Lisa Hallett Taylor, About's Guide to Pool and Patio, illustrates the "7 layers of protection" to employ to ward off disaster in this pictorial tutorial. Remember, the watchword for swimming pool landscaping is "safety."

Backyard Swimming Pool Project, Step by Step Lisa Hallett Taylor invites you to follow along with her as she presents the various steps involved in constructing a new swimming pool. About's Pool and Patio Guide takes you from excavating the pit to the glorious end result.
