Demolition of a landmark in Huntingdon town centre is about to start as part of a 25 million redevelopment scheme.
It is expected that knocking down the former Inland Revenue office block at the back of Chequers Court will take three months, leaving the site clear for the start of construction of new shops.
The building, which once featured the post office and an underground car park, had been part of a 1960s upgrade for the town centre, but has become an eyesore in recent years and replacement has long been on the cards.
Howard White, of the Churchmanor Estates Company which is a key player in the redevelopment plan, said: We will do all we can to minimise the impact of the demolition works and it is important to note that businesses along Chequers Court and St Germain Walk will remain open at all times.
The start of the demolition work is a welcome indicator that the town centre really is changing.
Mr White said: We are grateful to the small businesses that have occupied the building on a short-term basis prior to demolition and wish them well for their future.
Demolition of the Inland Revenue building, the decking in front of it and the bridge link near the All Day Cafe, has been scheduled to start in September.

The last bureaucratic hurdle between St. Johns Cathedral and its demolition plans for two buildings on Walnut Street has been removed.
The city of Knoxville has approved demolition permits for the buildings at 710 and 712 Walnut St.
City spokesman Jesse Mayshark said the permits were approved last week. The church is free to proceed with demolition, he said.
St. Johns wants to demolish the structures to gain better access to the churchs back entrance. The request has sparked opposition from local preservationists, who have argued that access to the parking lot isnt a good reason to remove the buildings, which date to the 1920s.
Its not clear when the demolitions will take place.
Arthur Seymour, an attorney for the church, said he assumes they will happen in the not-too-distant future, although he didnt have details.
Seymour referred scheduling questions to a contractor, who could not be reached for comment.
The citys Downtown Design Review Board had initially rejected the demolition application, but in June the Metropolitan Planning Commission overruled the design board and approved the move.
Demolition requests have been a hot topic in recent months.
Last week, the MPC approved a two-month postponement of a proposal to demolish the Pryor Brown parking garage, which occupies most of the block bordered by Gay Street, Cumberland Avenue, Market Street and Church Avenue.

Frankie Bell, 49 (right), with sons Brian, 17 (center), and Chris, 24 (not pictured here), and cousin David Sexton, 27, of Woodbine, begin stripping unnecessary parts from a 1993 Ford Taurus behind Bells residence outside Rockville on July 30. Before a car can run in the Montgomery County Agricultural Fairs demolition derby, all of the exterior glass and plastic has to be unbolted, unscrewed or otherwise torn from the body, along with any unnecessary components, such as rear seats and carpets.
The excitement of crashes, burns and explosions fills the seats of the demolition derby at the Montgomery County Agircultural Fair each year.
Thats how Scott Brown, co-chairman of entertainment at the fair, sees it.
Just seeing the destruction, thats what draws people, Brown said. If we have a couple of cars catch fire, the crowd goes wild.
Fans of crashing cars will get two chances to see mayhem at this years fair. Demolition derbies are scheduled for both Aug. 16 and 17 at 7:30 p.m.
Inside the ring actually a 100-foot-by-200-foot rectangle drivers also are bent of destruction, but in a different way. They want to have the last car running and win the nights purse.
The prizes are $100 for winning a heat and $500 for winning the final feature.
Or maybe not.
You win money, but we do it for fun, Frankie Bell, 49, of Rockville said.

WATERLOO, Iowa --- Better-than-expected demolition bids for the former Lafayette Elementary School left city leaders giddy.
Wide grins stretched across City Council members' faces Monday as bids received on the project came in well below the $500,000 estimate to raze the dilapidated building at 2265 Lafayette St.
Kelly Demolition and Excavating of Mount Vernon submitted the apparent low bid of $172,900, and three of the four bids came in below the estimate. Kelly Demolition did extensive work in Waterloo tearing down homes damaged in the 2008 floods.
"Forgive our frivolity," said Mayor Buck Clark. "This was an incredibly important bid for us tonight, and we got some very good bids."
Council members had sold $550,000 in general obligation bonds this fiscal year to knock down blighted buildings throughout the community. But several council members were concerned the Lafayette School project would eat up the entire amount, leaving no money to address other blighted houses which have been generating complaints.
Community Planning and Development Director Noel Anderson said he had been hoping there would be money left after the Lafayette School demolition to tear down several homes the city acquired through court orders, along with the former flea market building at West Sixth and Commercial streets downtown.
The city also hopes to acquire and raze the former Operation Threshold building near the Cedar Valley SportsPlex downtown.
Lafayette Elementary opened in 1912 and was closed by the Waterloo Community School District in 1973. It was sold by the school district to a private buyer for $500 in 1994. Another developer gave the building back to the city in December 2008 when his plan to renovate the structure as apartments was deemed infeasible.
The building is in such dangerous condition that asbestos can't be removed first, so the demolition contractor must handle the material as if it all contained the cancer-causing substance. The structure most be hosed down throughout the process, while trucks hauling debris to the landfill must be wrapped up tight.
While the asbestos issue boosts the demolition costs, the city put a generous time frame on the project --- giving the contractor until next spring to finish --- in hopes the winter demolition window would generate lower bids.
