Demolition derby a family sport - August 3, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

CHARLESTON The 2013 Coles County Fair demolition derby was all about family and a love for good ol fashion competition.

For Joe Scribner, passing the torch of demolition derby racing to his son, Andy Scribner, and daughter-in-law, Analyssa Scribner, was something he was happy to do, even if it meant he couldnt compete in the derby himself Friday evening.

Im disappointed because I wanted us all to be out there, but I will be back in the derby next year, Joe Scribner said. I decided to work on their cars instead and didnt have enough time to put mine together.

Joe Scribner, 55, a resident of Sullivan, has been around cars his whole life, has been competing in demolition derbies since he was 21-years-old and has won multiple first-place trophies throughout the years.

I love tearing up the cars, fixing them up and then seeing who can last the longest in the derby, Joe Scribner said.

Being at the fair on Friday night for moral support and as a source of demolition derby wisdom for his son and daughter-in law is what Joe Scribner strived to do.

I told them to not use the front end of their car a lot, he said. Thats where your radiator is and once thats gone, the car wont run anymore once it gets hot.

Andy Scribner, 25, has been racing sine he was 16 years old, thanks in part to his dad, Joe Scribner.

Although Andy Scribner has not won any trophies, he said he plans on using the advice of his father.

I dont have a strategy tonight other than using the back end of my car a lot, Andy Scribner.

Power plant demolition in Bakersfield goes wrong - August 3, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

The old steam power plant in Bakersfield, California, was being demolished when it imploded, sending debris flying and injuring at least five people.

Five spectators were injured Saturday after shrapnel was sent flying at the demolition of a decommissioned steam power plant in California's Central Valley, authorities said.

More than 1,000 people had gathered at 6 a.m. in a nearby parking lot to watch the planned implosion at the plant owned by Pacific Gas and Electric inBakersfield. After structures on the property came crashing down, a police officer at the scene heard a man screaming for help and saw his leg had been severed, police said.

"It was a piece of shrapnel that came flying out of the explosion and came across and went through a couple of chain link fences, struck him and impacted into a vehicle," said Lt. Scott Tunnicliffe.

The 44-year-old victim might lose his other leg as well due to his injuries, Tunnicliffe said.

Four other spectators were treated for minor injuries, said Kern County Fire engineer Leland Davis. All of the injured spectators were standing beyond a perimeter set up to ensure public safety, Davis said.

Residents of the city about 100 miles northwest of Los Angeles were eager to see the old plant torn down to make way for new development. The plant was decommissioned in 1986 and has been idle ever since.

Pacific Gas and Electric reached an agreement with the city to clean up the property and prepare it for sale. The company hired subcontractors to handle the demolition of the plant's boiler structures and worked with local authorities to set up a safe perimeter 1,000 feet from the site, said Denny Boyles, a company spokesman.

Onlooker seriously injured as power plant demolition goes awry - August 3, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

The demolition of an old power plant in Bakersfield on Saturday morning went badly off script when a man was seriously injured by large shards of flying debris, police said.

At 6 a.m. a crowd of several thousand people had gathered to watch the planned implosion of a shuttered, steam-generated power plant owned by Pacific Power and Electric, according to police and Denny Boyles, a spokesman for the power company.

The curious onlookers all stood behind a 1,000-foot safety perimeter put up by the demolition company that Pacific Power and Electric had hired for the job, Boyles said.

When all was ready, explosive charges placed at critical points in the building were detonated in a predetermined pattern meant to bring it down on itself in a heap of rubble and a cloud of dust.

In the moments after the structure fell, a police officer patrolling the event heard a man screaming nearby. Pieces of metal ejected from inside the plant during the implosion had struck a 43-year-old man, severing part of one leg, and caused serious injuries to another spectator, Tunnicliffe said.

At least two other people in the area suffered minor lacerations from metal pieces. Vehicles parked nearby were hit as well.

The seriously injured man was transported to a nearby hospital and later flown by helicopter to Fresno for further treatment, according to Tunnicliffe, who added that the man's condition was not known.

Police recovered one piece of metal that measured about a half-foot long and weighed a few pounds, Tunnicliffe said. The fragment that injured the man had been taken by a spectator, he said.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with this man and the others who received injuries," Boyles said. "As a company we are deeply saddened."

After previously tearing down other parts of the plant that had been out of use since 1986, the decison was made to implode two remaining steel boiler towers that stood 140-feet-tall, Boyles said.
