We're going high-end and want to install a big free-standing bathtub right in the middle of the bathroom. Before we start looking at different models, what basic information can you give us about free-standing bathtubs? Pete, Fla.
Dear Pete: A "free-standing" bathtub is pretty much what the name says. Free-standing baths are self-supporting tubs that are finished on all sides with no need to add wood framing. Basically, you put them into place and install the plumbing. The old cast-iron claw-foot tubs were the first example of a free-standing bath.
While you can still get free-standing tubs made with cast iron, solid-surface acrylic is quickly becoming the material of choice. This new heavy-duty material offers comfort, value and beauty, since it can be formed to fit any style. Also, solid-surface acrylic is available in a rainbow of colors and is very easy to clean and maintain.
Just remember, though, that with any free-standing tub, you do need to install a separate showering area since these tubs are designed for soaking only.
Bottom line: While a free-standing bath will add a decorative splash to the bathroom, you don't want it splashing water all over your floor!

South Gloucestershire Council chairman Cllr Ian Boulton turns pest control officer for a day

THE chairman of South Gloucestershire Council swapped his ceremonial chain for a wasp suit when he joined the authoritys pest control team.
Cllr Ian Boulton (Lab, Staple Hill) asked to see the team in action after learning that they are donating their fees for talks on pest control to his official charities, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Southmead Hospital and the Bristol Aero Collection.
Summer is traditionally a busy time for the team with wasps in particular causing problems for residents and businesses, and Cllr Boulton was able to get some hands-on experience of their vital work on several call-outs.
He said: "Pest control is a low-profile but vital aspect of the councils work and I was delighted to join the team for a day to see them in action.
"I was amazed at the variety of the teams work which covers everything from wasps nests and rats to fumigating buildings suffering from flea and cockroach infestation."
He added: "It was particularly interesting to learn how important pest control can be for our local businesses. For example in extreme cases, rat and mice infestation can close entire businesses down for days or even weeks so its good to know the team are available to deal with it quickly and effectively."
Pest control officer Tim Powles said: "It was great to have Ian along for the day and to tell him about the importance of good pest control.
"Fortunately most of us are rarely troubled by pests but when an infestation happens it can have quite serious consequences with harm or injury to humans and damage to property."

Helen Morgan was always creative, but like many young women in the mid-20th century, she went to secretarial school and raised a family.
She tapped into her creative genes by taking painting classes while her children grew up. But it wasn't until Morgan was in her 40s that she decided to go back to school and study fine arts.
And so, the Pennsylvania native enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh.
It took her six years she attended classes part-time while she raised her family but she earned her degree.
"She was a trailblazer for young women somebody who reinvented herself mid-life," said her daughter Ginger Robinson of Orlando.
Morgan went on to become a successful interior designer in Pittsburgh and later Central Florida when she moved to Orlando.
Morgan died July 27 of cancer. She was 91.
Robinson said that in an era when women were starting to feel empowered, her mother became a much more liberal person.
"She decided she was going to make her mark," Robinson said.
While Morgan attended the University of Pittsburgh, she started teaching fashion academy students in Pittsburgh about textiles, fabric and other elements of interior design.
