DIY Gas Water Heater Install – Video - February 28, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    DIY Gas Water Heater Install
Replacing a water heater is easy. They are light when empty. They are not cheap. Home center may post an installation price of $200 or so in addition to the cost of the unit. However, when the installer comes to your house, he may (will) find several items that need to be corrected AND WILL CHARGE YOU for them. IE venting, shut offs, electric service, gas lines, physical access, fittings, down tube for pressure relief valve, drain pan and drain lines, platform if installed in a garage, strapping in earthquake zone and every other code requirement. BTW If any water or steam whatsoever comes out of the Temperature and Pressure relief Safety Valve, something is wrong and needs to be corrected immediately. The water could be boiling and producing steam. The down tube connected here is just in case there is a failure and steam blows out of there, the steam does not scald you. The down tube serves no other function and is a safety requirement. Of course, to be injured, you would have to be standing right there when the failure occurred. In some areas, building codes require this to be piped outside to save property from water damage in the event of a failure. IMHO: Modern water heaters are well insulated and a thin blanket of insulation wrapped around the outside if the unit will do little to save any energy. Kind of a gimmick. Installing an expensive timer to turn on/off an electric water heater is Third World and can greatly reduce the convince of having hot water available ...

Timber – Tree removal – Video - February 28, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Timber - Tree removal
Taking out the hemlocks in front of the house. These trees were full grown when we bought the place over 40 years ago, and I have mixed emotions about taking them out. The risk to property and life is too great now to keep them. They will be missed.

Kenilworth fire at escalator manufacturer stopped by sprinkler system, quick firefighters - February 28, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

KENILWORTH A sprinkler system and a quick fire-department response stopped an intense fire from burning a massive commercial building where escalators are manufactured, said officials this morning.

The fire started at 3:25 a.m. on the roof of the North Michigan Avenue building which is about 100 feet by 800 feet, said Chief Louis Giordino.

About 40 feet of the roof was engulfed in flames at one point, Giordino said.

But the sprinkler system was activated by the heat, and it kept the flames from spreading down to the building below as well as notifying the fire department automatically about the blaze, he added.

It had a pretty good head start, but we got there quick and there was the sprinkler system, the chief said.

The fire was brought under control about 4:15 a.m., Giordino said. The "massive" building was not occupied at the time and there were no injuries reported, he added.

The cause is still under investigation, Giordino said.
