Mark Fies is honored to be named President of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry Metro DC chapter, the 3rd-largest chapter of the organization in the US.
Reston, VA (PRWEB) January 22, 2013
Fies, COO of Reston-based design-build firm Synergy Design & Construction, has previously served on the board of NARI Metro DC as treasurer for the past two years. As president, he will head up the organizations board of directors, which governs the chapter in conjunction with Executive Director Joe Normandy.
The only trade association in the nation geared specifically toward the remodeling industry, NARI requires its members to maintain a strict code of ethics and observe high standards of honesty, integrity and responsibility in business. Among other requirements, NARI contractors, suppliers and trade professionals must be properly licensed, registered and insured, must make an effort to write contracts that are beneficial to all parties, and must employ fair practices in competition, advertising, and sales promotion.
As a co-founder of Synergy D&C, Fies is familiar with the responsibilities inherent to running a business, seeking and keeping happy clients, coordinating with trade partners and vendors, and the remodeling industry as a whole. Im honored to serve as our chapters president. NARI represents and upholds the same standards that our company was founded upon quality, ethics, and sound business practices, says Fies.
Members of the NARI Metro DC chapter are anticipating a prosperous new year. According to recent market research, the greater DC area is considered the best potential market in the country due to a high number of households who engage in large remodeling projects and the number of aging homes. According to forecasts, this area should see over 260,000 remodeling and replacement projects in 2013.

Duo Dickinson likes to think of the time when it was common to buy a modest house with the expectation of improving and enlarging it as ones means increased.
Traditionally, we have adapted, renewed, and revitalized our existing homes, rather than search for the salvation of the next new home, the author-architect writes in his latest book Staying Put (Taunton Press, $24.95). The depressed state of the housing market has forced many to focus on the home they have now rather than assume a lifelong leapfrog up a never-ending path of escalating home values. As a result, families are rediscovering the traditional tether to home-sweet-home as a specific, fixed place rather than a movable stage set for our belongings, he writes.
And for all those houses still wearing a For Sale sign after months on the market, hed suggest their owners turn the house theyd trade in into a dream home theyll be happy they kept. Millions of families feel trapped, living a sentence of domestic frustration in homes that do not work for them while being unable to move to solve the problems they confront on a daily basis, Dickinson writes. This book offers tangible hope for getting the home you want from the house you have. Those who do it right might end up with a home thats easier to sell if they still want to move when the housing market turns around.
But Dickinson speaks loudest to those who buy into a neighborhood and seek to create for themselves a house that serves them well there. Those who buy to stay can benefit from living with a house for awhile before deciding to renovate it. One of the advantages of remodeling in place is that if youve lived in your home for any length of time, you know exactly what your homes problems and potentials are, he writes.
Dickinson, who has a portfolio of about 600 houses and 30 years experience, offers guidance on how those with the means to remodel can make the best of it. He uses more than 60 of his more recent projects to illustrate his guidance. Remodeling costs for those projects ranged from $100 per square foot to more than $1,000.
Dickinson covers the research and information that will help to mesh a homeowners dreams with building code and municipal requirements. Among his tips to save money and headaches: Before you jump into a remodeling project, find the one local attorney who deals with the town most. Someone who knows your area will know the opportunities and what the bottom line really is in a sea of ambiguity.
Throughout the book, dozens of before and after shots show how both interiors and exteriors are improved. Dickinson goes room by room, covering kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms, living rooms and social spaces as well as home offices, entryways and mud- rooms. Within the chapters, he touches on lighting and light flow through spaces as well as determining electrical needs for a familys lifestyle.
Dickinson has written seven books on residential design, and he believes in using innovations that can make a new or remodeled home as beautiful as possible for as little money as possible. Many of his tested ideas and techniques are covered in this volume. But sometimes a home isnt worth remodeling because of the potential for excessive costs and other factors. Among the books guidance is how to figure that out as well.

Tailgating plumber
Mithassel Ingenir og Rrleggerbedrift AS, Oslo. 22 January, 2013. Biskop Heuchs vei, Tsen. Plumber tailgating with few centimeters #39; distance from my rear wheel. The street is very icy and slippery (temp -15 deg C). Where there are parked cars on the left side, there is no room for overtaking. I was prepared to let him pass when there was room on the left side. I called the plumber this evening. He admitted that this was his usual way of driving. He also insisted that I should have been riding on the pavement(!)

When the water heater went out at his Pasadena home, Steven Stafford called his home warranty company, which sent a plumber from All State Plumbing, Heating & Cooling to replace it. Stafford paid the plumber $175 in cash to obtain a permit. When the plumber asked for more money, Stafford began to sense something was amiss.
"I couldn't understand what their deal was," Stafford said. "They were charging you all these extra things on top of what they were supposed to do. The next thing I knew, I was paying more for their services than the actual water heater cost."
He canceled the job, deciding to buy and install the water heater himself. When he called the county to inquire about the permit he had paid for, he was told no permit had been obtained.
Stafford is among thousands of Maryland consumers victimized by either All State Plumbing, Heating & Cooling Inc. or All State Plumbing Inc. and its owner, Wayne Garrity. On Jan. 3, the state attorney general ordered the companies and Garrity to pay at least $1 million in penalties and restitution.
All State and Garrity used unlicensed plumbers and skipped required safety inspections, the order found. The companies and their owner also admitted to some of the hundreds of instances of charging customers for permits never obtained, documents show. There is no evidence there was anything wrong with the plumbing work performed by All State.
Finksburg-based All State and Garrity "have a long-standing and disturbing pattern of being cited and fined by state and local regulatory authorities for failing to obtain permits and using unlicensed persons to perform plumbing services," according to findings in the state's case, heard last June by an administrative law judge.
The final order issued by the attorney general's consumer protection division required Garrity to pay a civil penalty of more than $700,000 and reimburse consumers for improper jobs, starting with an initial restitution fund of $250,000. He also must begin to comply immediately with state's Consumer Protection Act, which the state found he violated at least 7,079 times. If the company fails to comply, the order can be enforced in Circuit Court.
"We wanted to send a message," said Philip D. Ziperman, deputy chief of the consumer division, which upholds the consumer code but doesn't regulate plumbers. "We wanted to punish fairly egregious violations that were intentional. Our hope is a penalty this large will deter others who are acting similarly."
Garrity did not respond last week to repeated requests for comment.
But his attorney, Harvey K. Maizels, said he disagrees with the state's case and is considering an appeal.

Carter's My Plumber is sponsoring Calvin College student, Lauren Carter, in Nairobi, Kenya and she is reporting back about the level of sanitation in this 3rd world country. The owner's of Carter's My Plumber have a passion to learn about and improve the means of plumbing and water treatment in 3rd world countries.
Greenwood, Indiana (PRWEB) January 22, 2013
Lauren has sent a few Facebook messages commenting on the limitations of plumbing in this culture. They have literal holes for toilets, and the means for bathing is muddy water. Lauren commented the people in Maasai live for today, because they do not know if they will survive tomorrow. Food is so sparse and they dont have medical or sanitation resources; they have little means for survival. Lauren said it has been "a very humbling experience." She is experiencing the value of life first hand, and the detriments of poverty and lack of resources. Lauren will return to Grand Rapids, Michigan this week, and she will report back to the Carter's her assessments about the plumbing conditions in Kenya. The Carter's will determine if they will be able to make improvements and provide service to this country based on data collected.
Lauren is the daughter of Jamie and Lisa Carter, who own and operate Carter's My Plumber in Greenwood, Indiana. Lauren worked as a marketing intern this past summer for the Carters. Carter's My Plumber has sponsored Lauren in Africa, and they also have a heart for helping third world countries to improve the means of sanitation and plumbing. This past summer the Carter's traveled with Lauren to Haiti to install plumbing in an orphanage. Lauren is a junior at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she is studying Strategic Communications. She has a heart for mission work, and for bringing hope to people struggling in other parts of the world.
