Beware of appliance repair scam - June 1, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Jonathan Davis, 37 is wanted by Cobb County Police

COBB COUNTY, Ga -- If you need repairs for any of your appliances you might want to pay attention to a warning from Cobb County Police. They are looking for a suspect who has scammed consumers out of thousands of dollars.

Since January six residents in Cobb County have filed criminal complaints against Jonathan Davis, age 37. Lt. Destiny Davidson said Davis is a suspect in similar scams in Douglas County, Fulton County and DeKalb County. She said he purports to be an appliance repair man. "He does an initial examination of their appliance and usually says we'll have to order this part or that part and requests money up front," Lt. Davidson said.

Even though she's not alone, Jennifer Ciarletta of Marietta said she feels embarrassed that she and her husband were duped by Davis. "There's a part of you that feels silly and there's a part of you that's like, then you get kind of mad," she said.

Ciarletta said her dish washer broke and she reached out to Davis after searching for someone to repair it on line. "So what he told my husband was that it was $240 for a part plus $150 for the repairs and he needed the money for the part up front," she said.

Her husband wrote the check for $240 and Davis cashed it immediately. She said he never came back to their house to fix the dishwasher.

Marietta resident Claudia Morace said she wrote Davis a check for $500 for a part to fix her expensive stove. She said Davis had the audacity to come back to her house and tell her she needed more work. "The second time he came out it was just for another check for $124 and I've never heard from him again," she said.

"Besides the fact that I work hard for my money, as most people do, the second thing that hurts is I feel stupid," Morace said. "I feel that I was taken advantage of and should have known better."

Lt. Davidson said the victims got in touch with Jonathan Davis by Googling "appliance repairs" on line. She said Davis was able to manipulate Google so that his bogus companies would come up at the top of the list. She listed three of his companies as Apex Appliance, Atlanta Appliance and Triple Crown Movers.

"Apparently he's also learned to link himself into actual reputable businesses so that when people click on those businesses it re-directs to his phone number somehow," Lt. Davidson said.

DEP: Bucksport Derailment Spill Smaller Than Originally Thought - June 1, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

BUCKSPORT The Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) said Thursday that the amount of papermaking chemical spilled as the result of a train derailment last week is less than originally believed.

Initial estimates indicated that 4,000 to 6,000 gallons of a liquid latex product known as emulsified styrene butadiene copolymer had spilled into the Penobscot River when four cars went off the Pan Am Railway tracks Friday evening, May 25.

Those tank cars were part of a 32-car train headed for the Verso paper mill.

In an e-mail Thursday afternoon, DEP spokesman Samantha DePoy-Warren said department officials now believe somewhere between 100 and 1,000 gallons of the latex product spilled.

Our estimates are always based on the available information we are provided by our partners and can gather from our review of the scene while also taking into account planning for the worst case scenario, DePoy-Warren explained, and are subject to be updated as new information becomes available.

The two tank cars containing the liquid latex were fully offloaded Wednesday, DePoy-Warren said, with the contents being pumped up a steep embankment and into waiting empty rail cars.

Two other cars containing kaolin, a clay slurry also used in the papermaking process, are being offloaded Thursday and Friday. Some of that product has also spilled into the river, but DePoy-Warren said DEP has been unable to estimate a quantity.

The derailment occurred on a section of track where a steep embankment drops sharply toward the Penobscot River. At high tide, one of the cars is fully submerged, while another car is partially submerged and the end of a third car is also in the water.

One of those cars is leaking a small amount of [kaolin] product when the tide washes in and the water around the cars continues to be visibly milky, DePoy-Warren wrote. She said the material is expected to disperse and dissolve over the course of the tide cycles.

The plan for removing the derailed cars involves patching them and transporting three of them via the Penobscot River to Winterport, where a Pan Am crane will pull them out of the water, according to DePoy-Warren.

Being ‘busy’ pays for top 10 architects and developers - June 1, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Yong this years award will recognise the busiest property developers and architecture firms.

WINNERS LEAGUE: Back again, bigger and boasting two award categories for property developers and architecture firms plus green buildings, the BCI Asia Awards recognised the top 10 most active firms recently.

This year marks the 8th annual BCI Asia Awards being organised. Since we first started in 2005, we have given recognition to 10 of the most active architecture firms in the seven Asian countries where we operate, namely Vietnam,

Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines and Hong Kong, said Kelvin Yong, country manager of BCI Asia in Malaysia.

Yong added that since last year, BCI Asia introduced a new award category for property developers which is based on the aggregate value of projects.

This is a record year which saw Arkitek MAA Sdn Bhd and BEP Akitek Sdn Bhd winning the award for the seventh time each. The other winners are SA Architects Sdn Bhd and VERITAS Architects Sdn Bhd, both winning for the sixth time and Akipraktis, winning for the fifth time.

It was a first win for both ArchiCentre Sdn Bhd and B.L. Tay Architect from Penang. The rest of the winners in the architecture category that have won three times and below are ATSA Architects Sdn Bhd, KAZ Akitek Sdn Bhd and NWKA Architects Sdn Bhd, Yong revealed.

In the property developers category, Dijaya Corporation Bhd, IJM Land Berhad, IOI Properties Berhad, Mah Sing Group Berhad, Nadayu Properties Bhd, NAZA TTDI Sdn Bhd, Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Selangor (PKNS), Sime Darby Property Bhd, SP Setia Berhad and Sunway Berhad emerged in the top 10 most active list.

Besides recognising leading developers and architecture firms, the awards also aim to recognise firms that will shape the built environment of the future, and their impact, both socially and on the environment.

A few years ago, we started a category for the FuturArc Prize and the FuturArc Green Leadership Award. The FuturArc prize is an international competition for green building designs while the Green Leadership Award, started in 2008, is an international award recognising the contribution of architects to sustainable design or green built projects.

Hotel, retail space planned on Georgia Power site on River St. - June 1, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A new multi-million dollar development complex is planned for the Georgia Power site on historic east River St.

A developer wants to build two hotels, a parking garage in excess of 500 parking spaces and retail complex on the waterfront property.

The Savannah Chatham Metropolitan Planning Commission approved a draft of the proposal during a special meeting Thursday.

Before the proposal is finalized, the developer will have to meet the historic district's height guidelines, which are set in place by the city to preserve the look of the historic district.

While the Georgia Power office building isn't a historic building, it will be preserved and not be demolished.

River Street may also be widened to accommodate additional traffic and pedestrians. Under the proposal, a pedestrian only access will be constructed that will connect Trustees Gardens and pedestrian traffic from Bay St. to River St. and the Savannah River Walk.

No public funding will be required for the project, but rather, all funds for the construction will be privately funded.

The Historic Board will go before the Metropolitan Planning Committee June 5 for further approval.

Restoration of Longview historical home starts - June 1, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Restoration of Longviews historical Judge J.N. Campbell House should start showing some visible signs in coming weeks, according to Lynette Goodson with Preservation Longview.

She and other Preservation Longview board members on Thursday afternoon met with representatives of Total Engineering Services of Longview and Kirk Acheson, project architect. While behind-the-scenes work of raising money, applying for grants and working with state historical preservation officials has been on-going, Goodson said visible restoration work has not taken place.

This is a momentous event, she said of Thursdays meeting. They should report back to us in two to three weeks with drawings and plans that well get to the city and the state but people should start seeing progress on the restoration later this summer.

Acheson said his firm is mostly working on the structural and mechanical engineering aspects of the project.

The house is basically in pretty good shape, he said after an inspection. A lot of the beams and timbers are in good shape. Theyll have to beef up the under structure and reinforce the floor joists on the second floor and do work on the foundation to keep it from settling more.

While the house on South Center Street is sound, he said the fact it is being re-purposed from a residence to public use and that building codes are much different, means a lot of work will be needed.

It has challenges with installing a sprinkler system, putting in HV/AC and new electrical, Acheson said.

The Judge Campbell House is an 1872 Victorian home with a history that dates to Longview's earliest beginnings. It is one year younger than the city and was home to several prominent residents, including the late Gregg County Judge James Nathaniel Campbell, the younger brother of a Texas governor.

The Queen Anne-style, neo-classical home became a Texas historical landmark in 1965 but has fallen into disrepair in recent years.

Public Hearing On Property Maintenance - June 1, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Written by Joe Scotchie: jscotchie@antonnews.com Friday, 01 June 2012 00:00

The proposed law is a response by the village to the continued existence of foreclosed homes in Massapequa and their upkeep, which village officials are displeased with. If approved, the ordinance would require that all individual and bank-owned homes be properly maintained. More specifically, the proposed law would cover the maintenance of pools, shrubbery, windows, siding and general upkeep of the property.

The law will have strict maintenance requirements so that the residents of Massapequa Park do not have to live with the mismanagement and ill will of those institutions, rental property owners and negligent homeowners who hold title to properties within the Village of Massapequa Park, said Mayor James A. Altadonna. A message needs to be sent that we will no longer tolerate poor property maintenance in our community or any community and that the hardworking people who maintain their homes should not have to live with adverse conditions next door to them.

The June 11 meeting will be held at 8 p.m. in Village Hall, 151 Front St. Village officials said the meeting would discuss the law in detail, but they did not say if the BOT would seek passage.

At recent meetings, the BOT has approved a $10,000 transfer in funds from the contingency account to the unemployment insurance segment of the village budget.

It has also referred the Planning Commission to study the possible installation of a four-way stop sign at the intersection of Van Buren Street and Park Boulevard. The BOT, in May, authorized the village administrator to sign a cash management direct service agreement with Flushing Bank to install an IronKey trusted solution device for internet banking. It also approved the annual stormwater management plans annual report, plus cabaret licenses for both Il Classico Restaurant and The Good Life, located respectively, on 4857 Merrick Rd. and 1039 Park Blvd.

Finally, two new banners will be waving from Massapequa thoroughfares this summer. The BOT approved a request to hang a Massapequa Hall of Fame banner at the Massapequa Park Long Island Rail Road station from June 1 until Aug. 1. Similarly, a banner from the Ancient Order of Hibernians for Irish Night will be placed at the same location from Sunday, June 17 through Saturday, June 30.
