National Archives and Records Administration Leases Space in Hunt Midwest SubTropolis - June 2, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

KANSAS CITY, Mo., June 1, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Hunt Midwest Real Estate Development, Inc. announces that the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) has signed a lease for 102,000 s.f. of industrial warehouse and office space in Hunt Midwest SubTropolis, the world's largest underground business complex. The new lease also includes options for expansion up to 372,000 s.f.

The new facility in SubTropolis consolidates several non-NARA certified locations to enhance productivity. "NARA's decision to combine several operations into one at SubTropolis is a great example of best-value procurement," said Ora Reynolds, president of Hunt Midwest Real Estate Development. "Not only does the underground offer excellent value compared to surface buildings, SubTropolis offers the efficiency and desired contiguous space NARA needs for cost-effective growth."

SubTropolis, which recently earned the highest ENERGY STAR energy performance rating possible from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Energy (DOE), is considered a NARA-certified location for a number of reasons including sustainability, constant temperature and humidity levels, security and energy efficiency.

NARA will join several other government tenants in SubTropolis. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) maintains a 43,200 s.f. emergency response operation in the underground. The United States Postal Service (USPS) Stamp Distribution Center, which distributes stamps and packaging products to post offices, operates in 217,114 s.f. The USPS also leases an additional 311,600 s.f. in SubTropolis for its Stamp Fulfillment Center that fulfills online orders for commemorative stamps, rst-day covers, Forever stamps and other postage products for the entire country.

"In total, federal government tenants will occupy nearly one million square feet of space in SubTropolis if NARA expands to the full 372,000 s.f. allowed for in this new lease," Reynolds said.

The NARA facility is the first project located in the newest phase of SubTropolis north of Derrough Drive. Access will be available from Parvin Road into SubTropolis via the new Derrough Drive entrance.

Hoefer-Wysocki Architects is the architect and Valor Construction is the general contractor for this project, which is set to be completed this fall. The initial phase includes two 45,000 s.f. storage pods with more than 1.6 million lbs. of steel shelving. NARA's facility will also include an additional 12,000 s.f. for office and staging areas.

PNoy's CJ choice: Will it be Henares or De Lima? - June 2, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

OFF TO SC? Will De Lima or Henares be appointed chief justice?

MANILA, Philippines - So will President Benigno Aquino III consider one of his Cabinet members for the post of chief justice or not?

The names of tax commissioner Kim Henares, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima and Solicitor-General Francis Jardeleza have been floated as possible replacement for ex-Chief Justice Renato Corona. He was removed from his post on May 29 after the impeachment court found him guilty of failing to disclose in his statement of assets, liabilities and net worth US$2.4 million and P80 million.

But Aquino told Rappler on June 1, Friday, that while he "doesn't want to stop anybody's progress," they are already effective members of the Cabinet and pulling out any of them from his team will only give him another problem: "Who will fill in their shoes?"

He said he's not even sure if Henares will even consider being a judge. Jardeleza, on the other hand, had just recently been appointed solicitor-general after serving as deputy ombudsman for Luzon for less than a year.

De Lima said, however, she's not closing her doors to being nominated chief justice.

    Decisions, decisions

In an interview with Ted Failon of broadcast network ABS-CBN, however, Aquino said he is still studying if having De Lima or Henares appointed chief justice -- and letting them go from his cabinet -- would do more good than harm. He said he believes both of them are competent.

Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima has expressed support for Henares' possible nomination to the post of chief justice, but the head of the Bureau of Internal Revenue said she would rather stay and finish her job at the BIR. Yet, she also indicated a degree of openness to an appointment when she later said, Lets cross the bridge when we get there.

Henares is one of the witnesses in the impeachment trial against Corona. She testifed that Corona's wife Cristina bought an P11-M property in La Vista even if she had no declared source of income.

Lewiston bar adds groceries: Kwik Trip remodeling leaves town without gas station - June 2, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

LEWISTON, Minn. You can grab the morning newspaper, a cold one, or even walk out with a carton of eggs and a gallon of milk at The Recreation Bar and Cafe.

Just about the only thing the bar isnt selling these days is gas.

The establishment began selling food and other items this week after Lewistons Kwik Trip closed for a summer-long renovation. Clifford Pierce, the Recreations owner, said he didnt want his customers to go without the basics during that time.

A couple weeks ago, I heard they were going to shut down for awhile, Pierce said. I got thinking about how thered be no places to get bread, eggs, and milk.

Up the road on Main Street, Petes Meats is also selling milk, eggs, butter, and stocking more chips and bread.

The Recreation has plenty of gas-station staples, including orange juice, soda, butter, cheese, and lunch meat. Friday, Pierce even added a cappuccino maker to the dining room. Soon he hopes to begin selling ice.

Customers are still making the transition. In the first few days, he sold a handful of newspapers and other goods.

Weve sold some milk and eggs, nothing real serious yet, Pierce said.

Kwik Trip is scheduled to reopen Sept. 6 at 10 a.m. In the meantime, employees have the option to work at other area locations, according to Kwik Trip spokesman John McHugh.

McHugh said the company decided to rebuild the store because business was thriving.

County chamber closes office for remodeling - June 2, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By SCOTT RAWDON

ThisWeek Community News Saturday June 2, 2012 6:33 AM

The Licking County Chamber of Commerce will close its doors to walk-in traffic in June and July so a remodeling project can be completed.

The chamber closed its office at 50 W. Locust St. in Newark to walk-in customers May 30.

Chamber President Cheri Hottinger said the office will be remodeled to accommodate additional office and meeting space for the newly formed Grow Licking County Community Investment Corporation initiative.

"We are pleased to announce that we will be contracting with chamber member Project Construction Co. of Hebron," Hottinger said.

Project Construction -- formerly Brezina Construction Services -- not only is a chamber member, but also the low bidder on the renovation, she said.

Hottinger said the chamber will fund the project on its own without using any county funds. She would not disclose the project's cost.

"The main level of the chamber will be completely renovated to be able to house our new economic development director, Dan Evers, as well as update the building," Hottinger said.

"It hasn't been updated since it was built in the early '70s," she said.

Parade home inspired by rural setting - June 2, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Up a newly laid crushed rock driveway and through an archway opening made in a treeline sits one of Chippewa Valley's newest farmhouses.

Though surrounded by rented farm fields, owners of the new home only plan to plant what will grow in their backyard garden, making the home agriculturally related in appearance but not really in practice.

Builder and owner Lance Brunkow said he and his wife, Gaye, wanted a house that drew inspiration from classic farmhouses but had all the modern touches desired by them and their three teenage children.

"We wanted to do something that fit in," said Lance Brunkow, owner of Brunkow Builders. "We tried to be fairly authentic, but with new products."

The new house fits surprisingly well with the surrounding farms just south of Eau Claire's city limits.

Doors on the three-stall detached workshop and garage appear to be made of wood and steel, salvaged from an old carriage house. But the doors roll up like a standard modern garage door.

While a wood-burning stone fireplace in the living room can be used to warm the main floor, the home is primarily heated using a geothermal system, a network of buried pipes that draws heat from the earth.

Classic white siding running along the outside of the house was laid on top of an inch of foam insulation. Brunkow used SmartSide, a composite material offering the strength, low maintenance, moisture resistance and aesthetic benefits of cement siding, but with easier installation and less weight.

The house is one of 16 on the 38th annual Chippewa Valley Parade of Homes, which starts next weekend.

District discusses Sewer Master Plan - June 1, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

MICHIGAN CITY What will the population and sanitary sewer statistics be in 40 years and how is that relevant to the Michigan City Sanitary District?

That was a question recently answered at a recent District board meeting after the board heard a presentation on the Lake Michigan Watershed Sanitary Sewer Master Plan by Cynthia L. Fort, director of environmental engineering with American Structurepoint, Inc.

The plan originated from the La Porte County Regional Sewer District. It is based on the countys topography, soils and demographics.

District Attorney James Meyer introduced the Sanitary Sewer Master Plan, saying any sewage collected in La Porte County will eventually have to come through the Michigan City District plant because communities and residents using septic tanks outside of Michigan City may want to tie into its sewer lines.

A trend based on the last 40 years shows that La Porte County could grow 1.1 percent every ten years, and the population will be over 114,000 people in 40 years, Fort said.

There are six areas the La Porte County Regional Sewer District could connect to Michigan City to provide wastewater treatment. They are at U.S. Highway. 421, Wozniak Road, Johnson Road, U.S. 35, U.S. 20 and County Road 1000 North.

Fort told the board that she suggested to La Porte County, that as it implements the plan, it would need to evaluate the costs to buy into the Michigan City treatment facility. She said examples of costs include connection fees.

There are ways to grow it organically, Fort said, noting that it would start with what works to how much it would cost to install, like eight-inch in diameter sewer lines and small lift stations, and ten years later, install larger sewers lines and lift stations.

City Engineer Charles Peller questioned what it would cost for the city to upgrade, a cost not included in the plan. The city would need to invest at least $50 million to connect with La Porte County Sewer District, Fort explained. It requires more lift stations, pumps, sewer systems and discharging treated sewage into Trail Creek, the Little Calumet and Galena water systems draining into Lake Michigan. It would be a final predicted amount for the county with connection fees estimated at $49,788,000 plus another $50 million, totaling at least $100 million overall.

Rangers bring banjo smiles - June 1, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Contributed photo Steep Canyon Rangers does bluegrass right on its latest CD, "Nobody Knows You."

It's summer now, and that means green trees, shady country lanes, long afternoons of fishing and the smell of freshly mowed grass from shady front porches.

    Oh, and bluegrass music.

Speaking of bluegrass music, the BrownChicken BrownCow Stringband made a strong impression on acoustic music fans when the talented young West Virginia pickers brought their hot and innovative "new traditional" bluegrass to the Iron Horse Pub in March. They promised to return, and they will when they settle in Saturday night for a second go-round at the Iron Horse Pub.

If you can't make it to the BrownChicken BrownCow show, the group's three albums are available at its website, and they're all good reasons to become BrownChicken fans.

And any of these other new releases will help set a bluegrass mood.

"Nobody Knows You" by Steep Canyon Rangers

Banjo-picking comedic legend Steve Martin could have gotten any top bluegrass outfit to be his backup band in the studio and on the road, but he chose the Steep Canyon Rangers. The Rangers' new album, "Nobody Knows But You," again showcases the distinctive spark that drew Martin to the group.

While the Rangers work within the traditional bluegrass mold as invented by Bill Monroe, they don't let strict traditionalism confine them, often breaking out on songs like "Between Midnight and the Dawn" before returning to the rollicking banjo-driven fun on tunes such as "As I Go" and "Ungrateful One."
