The Sports Authority store at Santa Fe Place is planning to double its space by moving into part of the old Mervyn's site early next year in what mall owners hope will spark redevelopment of the shopping center.
Sports Authority, a privately held company based in Englewood, Colo., has a 19,000-square-foot store inside the mall. The expansion would double its space and give the store a higher profile, the manager said.
Construction on the 40,000-square-foot Mervyn's space will begin in October, with the opening of a new Sports Authority set for spring 2013, according to a news release from Trademark Property.
The current Sports Authority space is not enough to allow for a full-service store. With the expansion, the sporting goods store will have its own entrance and be able to offer a full line of products, said Tommy Miller, president of the Fort Worth-based Trademark Property Co.
Founded in 1928, Sports Authority operates 450 stores in 45 states and has 7,400 employees, but the only other New Mexico store is in Albuquerque. No one from Sports Authority was available to elaborate on the expansion.
Trademark Property acquired Santa Fe Place with a private equity partner in June 2010. It has since announced redevelopment plans for the mall, which has 571,000 square feet of retail space with Dillard's, J.C. Penney and Sears as anchors. But those plans have stalled due to the economic downturn.
Miller said Sports Authority will take two-thirds of the Mervyn's space on the side by Sears. There is interest in the rest of the space, and the commitment by the sporting goods chain should help recruit new tenants, he said.
The Mervyn's retail chain declared bankruptcy in 2009, and the space has been empty since then.
According to the Trademark Property Co. website, the mall redevelopment would include:
An open-air "lifestyle court" at the main entrance.

Thousands Gather for Iconic Architectural Projection Supporting REDD+
Corporate Champions Pledge to Buy Millions of Dollars Worth of REDD+ Emissions Reductions from Innovative Forest Protection Projects around the World.
RIO DE JANEIRO, June 20, 2012 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- Thousands of people from around the globe gathered at Arcos da Lapa last night to support the launch of Code REDD, an emergency action campaign to save the threatened forests of the world.
(PHOTO: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120620/SF27657)
The celebration of the Code REDD Campaign( http://www.coderedd.com ) launch got under way as the historic Arcos da Lapa aqueduct in the heart of Rio was transformed by Obscura Digital with an architectural projection experience of visuals and sound followed by the premier of a Code REDD film that demonstrated Code REDD's solution to stop deforestation now.
The event was designed to enlist widespread grassroots support for the Campaign. The film asked the crowd to demonstrate support by going online to coderedd.com/glow( http://www.coderedd.com/glow ) to make their phones flash red with a digital "emergency code." The experience drew a parallel between the digital transformation of Arcos da Lapa and the way Code REDD aims to transform how corporations, landowners, governments and the general public unite to save the threatened forests of the world.
"Deforestation is an economic problem," stated Karin Burns, Executive Director of the Code REDD Campaign. "REDD+ is a viable economic solution that can scale to meet the massive scope of this challenge."
Earlier that day, on the eve of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, Rio+20, Burns and Mike Korchinsky, Founder of Code REDD, hosted a press conference at the Royal Tulip Hotel in Rio de Janeiro. UNESCO, major multinational corporations, REDD+ project developers, and representatives of indigenous forest communities came together to announce their participation in the global launch of the Code REDD Campaign.
At the press conference, Gretchen Kalonji, UNESCO's Assistant Director General for Natural Sciences stressed the urgency of action against deforestation worldwide and the importance of public-private partnerships, such as the CODE-REDD Campaign. UNESCO's network of Biosphere Reserves provides a platform for collaboration and exchange among local communities on novel models for climate change mitigation, protection of bio-cultural diversity and local economic development.
Other stakeholders from Corporate Champions to community leaders expressed support for the Code REDD Campaign and REDD+ as well:

The vacant big white house on Bernel Road in State College, Pa., shown here in November 2011, was the first home of The Second Mile charity founded by Jerry Sandusky to help disadvantaged kids.
By Lisa Riordan-Seville and Hannah Rappleye NBC News
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Those who know the house on Bernel Road will tell you its behind Beaver Stadium, near the airport on the outskirts of town -- a town still trying to piece itself together in the wake of one of the biggest scandals in college football history.
The two-story white colonial home represents the past, and future, of The Second Mile, a charity founded by Jerry Sandusky. It was on this land that Sandusky first realized his dream to create an organization for disadvantaged children.Until last November, it was also to be the home of The Second Miles most ambitious project to date a multimillion-dollar Center for Excellence intended to help those kids pursue big dreams.
Instead, it now sits quiet and empty on the edge of about 60 acres of overturned earth, a reminder of the crushed aspirations attributable to a criminal case unfolding less than a dozen miles to the north.
And the existence of the well-respected charity cuts to the heart of the central question in the criminal case: Was it the lifes work of a man who genuinely cared about the well-being of disadvantaged kids, or merely a cover for his illicit appetites?
As Jerry Sandusky's lawyers plan to argue that alleged victims are motivated by money from civil lawsuits, they are also weighing the possibility of taking the biggest risk of all putting their client on the witness stand. NBC's Michael Isikoff reports from Bellefonte, Pa.
Last week, eight of the alleged victims -- two remain unknown to prosecutors -- offered tearful testimony in a small-town courthouse in Bellefonte, Pa., about the sexual abuse they say they endured at the hands of Sandusky.
Sanduskys defense began presenting its case on Monday, calling several former coaching colleagues and others as character witnesses.

Like Stephen Harpers controversial omnibus bill, Ontarios proposed budget legislation is a Trojan horse, one chock full of unexpected surprises.
Under the guise of implementing Finance Minister Dwight Duncans March budget, the Strong Action for Ontario Act would casually whittle away at environmental protection.
More alarmingly, it would appear to give Premier Dalton McGuintys cabinet extraordinary authority to restructure or privatize public institutions such as hospitals and schools without consulting the legislature.
McGuinty and Duncan are furious that the opposition New Democrats, having agreed to the broad strokes of his budget, are balking at this bill a bill that at one swoop would amend or create 69 statutes.
But the real question is why Andrea Horwaths NDP didnt dig their heels in earlier.
So far, most attention has focused on McGuintys threat to call a snap election if his budget bill isnt passed intact.
Given that no party including McGuintys Liberals wants an election, thats a hollow threat.
The more interesting and largely unexamined issue is what happens if the bill is passed.
First, Ontarios budget bill aims to weaken environmental regulations that might interfere with resource activities such as mining and forestry.
It would amend the Crown Forest Sustainability Act to let cabinet exempt timber companies from their current obligation to prepare management plans every five years. And it would give the cabinet broad authority let such companies ignore cutting limits.

And what is so rare a day in June? wrote the poet James Russell Lowell. Then, if ever, come perfect days. Except in Ottawa, where the fairest month is primarily a time to speculate about the entrails of power. Whos up, whos down and whos out in the cabinet shuffle expected before the fall session?
This season, as in the past, Prime Minister Stephen Harper is holding his cards preternaturally close to his vest. However, he is expected to put a new face on the government beginning in early August with a deputy-minister shuffle, then continuing in late August or September at the ministerial level.
Conservative insiders expect this remix will be substantial, as the government seeks to re-calibrate following a first year in majority during which it was repeatedly buffeted by controversy, ministerial missteps and scandal. Though the final roster will remain known only to the PM and perhaps his wife and chief of staff until shortly before it is unveiled, a few names recur.
TOP DOGS
Jim Flaherty is not expected to budge from Finance, as he remains the mainstay of the Tories economics team. Three other names top Conservatives lists of senior ministers whove consistently outperformed and have earned their pick of jobs: Jason Kenney at Immigration, John Baird at Foreign Affairs and James Moore at Heritage.
Any one of these three could be airlifted into Defence to clean house there. The drawback would be that each is helping the government appreciably now in a key portfolio. Kenney is two-thirds of the way through his overhaul of immigration. Baird is hitting his stride as a foreign minister, having spent the better part of the past year outgrowing his old attack-dog persona. Moore has managed to ride herd on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation without a major upheaval for a Conservative, a feat of ineffable dark magic.
RISING STARS
The acknowledged up-and-comers, in no particular order, are Chris Alexander, Ajax-Pickering; Michelle Rempel, Calgary-Centre-North; Candice Hoeppner, Portage-Lisgar; Kellie Leitch, Simcoe-Grey; and James Rajotte, Edmonton-Leduc.
Rempel is bright, a good communicator and holds Jim Prentices former seat. Leitch, a pediatric surgeon and frequent pinch-hitter in Question Period, holds the seat once held by Helena Guergis. Rajotte, respected in caucus and chair of the Commons finance committee, has long been deemed a shoo-in for promotion, but has been held back by the preponderance of strong Alberta MPs, including the PM, already in cabinet.
