19-06-2012 13:51 The El-Shaddai community church, health clinic, primary school and feeding centre were all destroyed by the January 2010 earthquake. Supporting the community, EMAS is helping Haiti build, better than before, with assistance from Engineering Ministries International (eMi). In March 2011, construction began on the El?Shaddai Ministry Centre, in Bon Repos (Port-au-Prince), which is to include a church/hurricane shelter, primary school, feeding centre and healthcare clinic. EMAS supports the primary school and the feeding programme which provides a meal three times a week for the children. EMAS also sends a medical team annually which sees many patients and conducts training to empower local healthcare providers. They leave behind medical supplies and toys for the children. They also organised a sports programme for the young people of the El-Shaddai church.

AUGUSTA, Ga -- Neighbors from West Augusta packed the commission chambers Tuesday to fight against a proposed apartment complex.
"We'd rather see some houses go back there instead of apartments," Kevin Wilson said. He lives in the Hillcreek neighborhood.
People in the quiet neighborhood off Augusta West Parkway say they want their neighborhood to stay quiet, and building an apartment complex would bring concerns.
"The crime element, the noise level, the traffic," Jeanne Corley said. She also lives nearby.
Right now, the land near the neighborhood is zoned for commercial offices, but developers want to put more than 200 apartments there instead. They say the apartments would actually cause less traffic than offices would.
"[Here is a] full traffic study showing that current zoning will generate between 2,100 and 7,000 daily trips," Jim Trotter said on behalf of potential developers.
"That traffic leaves in the afternoon and night time and weekends." Jeanne rebutted. "We're not constantly bombarded with constant flow of traffic."
Commissioners sided with neighbors as they voted unanimously to deny rezoning the land that would allow apartment construction.
"It's nice to have the consensus there," Commissioner Joe Bowles said.

The city of Rapid City issued permits for $32.5 million in construction work in May, pushing the total so far this year to more $100 million.
Two large apartment projects were among the biggest projects, city officials said. A full list of projects permitted in May was not available at news deadline because the city is implementing a new electronic permit-tracking system and was not able to generate the full report at the time of the Journal's request.
May permits include the $11 million Village at Founders Park apartment complex, with 126 upscale units, as well as the $3.5 million, 34-unit Rocker Square student apartment building near South Dakota School of Mines & Technology.
The projects are part of a total of 266 new residential permits permitted through May in the city, including 71 single-family homes. That is more total units than were built in each of the last three years.
Crews on Monday placed the final precast concrete panel on the Rocker Square building. Project manager Brandon Moore of J. Scull Construction Services said the project is on track for its Aug. 15 completion date. The roof is going on this week, and inside, workers are on different floors finishing framing, mechanical systems and drywall.
Everybodys kind of chasing each other up, Moore said, referring to how different tradesmen are progressing up the floors of the six-story building.
Construction on a second Rocker Square student apartment building is expected to begin within 30 to 40 days, Moore said.

"You see thousands of people using the dirty water of the canal because there is no other option," he said.
"We have never experienced this sort of massive load shedding before in Pakistan. It's unprecedented."
In April, a 19-year-old woman fell into a coma in a Lahore hospital because a power cut during an operation to remove her appendix shut off her oxygen supply.
Other problems include the spoiling of frozen food and the crippling of industrial production, including in Pakistan's vital textile sector.
The government has sought to give the impression that it has the situation under control. On Tuesday prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, speaking before the supreme court disqualified him from office, announced a high-powered "energy conference" of top officials. It would have been the eighth such event in 14 months, but critics say they lead to no substantial changes.
Economists say there is very little the government can do, given the country's dire fiscal position.
Years of not paying electricity providers has created huge debt piles, which grow constantly as a result of interest charges and continued spending on electricity.
In March, the country's natural resources minister told parliament that the so-called "circular debt" stood at 2.7 billion.
The state coffers are in no position to help as public funds have been consumed by the country's huge defense budget and interest payments on existing debt. Those two items alone make up about 65% of state spending.
Last month, Gilani suggested the power problem could be solved by simply printing more banknotes, despite already soaring inflation.

In response to the developing health crisis on L.A.'s Skid Row, the City of Los Angeles today launched a comprehensive program to address the ongoing health hazards on the area's streets, such as human waste, hypodermic needles and condoms.
Dubbed Operation Healthy Streets, the program was initiated by the Department of Public Works and includes an intensive, multi-day cleaning of the poverty-stricken neighborhood's streets and sidewalks. A release, which notes some of the other health hazards as rodent infestations and contaminated objects, says "the required cleanup will include street and sidewalk power washing and disinfection, which necessitates the removal of all items from the affected public rights-of-way."
To aid in this removal, the city along with the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) have reached out daily to the homeless and other encampers to inform them of the cleaning and request that they move their belongings in advance. Two free property storage options -- 500 new storage bins at the Central City East Check-In Center and a secure warehouse on East Temple Street -- have been provided by the city for the area's inhabitants.
Patrick Butler, assistant chief with the Los Angeles Fire Department and acting spokesman for Operation Healthy Streets, told Los Angeles Downtown News, "Were coming out Tuesday morning with the Bureau of Sanitation, Bureau of Street Services and public health experts and were going to identify those items which are clearly public health issues as referenced in the county report."
The 32-page report followed the city's May request for a public health inspection of Skid Row, which revealed the neighborhood's hazardous conditions. Ordered by the county to clean up the area by May 29, the city obliged and is obviously taking cleanliness matters further. The city hoped the inspection would aid in its fight against a court injunction limiting controversial sweeps to dismantle sidewalk encampments; a decision by 9th Circuit Court of Appeals is expected this summer.
Focusing within the six blocks of Skid Row bordered on the north by East 5th Steet, on the south by East 7th Street, on the east by Gladys Avenue and on the west by Wall Street, the cleanup is expected to last for about two to three weeks. The release added that the work area will expand as needed to address all public health concerns.

Elana and David have three twenty-something kids with very different needs. Their eldest, Laurence, is in a wheelchair, and he needs space and special consideration when it comes to interior design. The other two children are off at college, but come home often to visit. The basement rec room should be a fun place for this sports-loving family to gather, but instead the room was as cold as the unused fireplace. A mishmash of furniture and a lack of purpose translated into an abandoned and lonely space.
I came up with a plan that scored with everyone sort of a "locker room luxe" design that had the home team cheering.
We ran into a couple of hiccups during the demolition specifically, the uneven cement floor and the water damage we found around the fireplace. Once we corrected those problems, though, it was full speed ahead.
My design called for the creation of two distinct zones.
The first is a TV zone, with a comfortable couch upholstered in a durable and spill-resistant indigo fabric. The couch anchors this space, and is placed directly opposite the big-screen television, which is flanked with custom adjustable shelving units. An oh-so-comfortable brown leather lounger with matching ottoman takes up residence between the TV and the new gas fireplace, still allowing plenty of room for Laurence to roll in and maneuver around.
A simple wooden-topped coffee table with sturdy legs and a sports-themed side table will accommodate lots of game-day snacks. Recessed lighting in the ceiling gives overall illumination, while two sconces flank the couch.
A beautiful nickel pendant lamp hangs over the other zone, a games-table-slash-conversation-nook with a couple of very comfy, creamy club chairs and a special adjustable table that raises enough to accommodate the arms of Laurence's wheelchair. The wall behind the games table was covered with a bold, graphic-patterned grasscloth wall covering that has just enough texture and dimension to catch the light cast down from the recessed ceiling fixtures.
The wall covering provides a tasteful touch that the gals love. And as for the accessories, they are all about the guys and their sports! Trophies, cups and hockey pucks all found their way into this space, but with a luxurious twist. The result is a room where the family will be as comfortable sharing a pizza during a game as it will be inviting friends in for a glass of wine and a chat.
Speaking of beverages, Laurence requested a drinks dispenser in the rec room, so we installed a bar fridge in a custom built-in counter, nicely tucked away, and used blackboard paint above it to create a surface that is perfect for scorekeeping. This was custom framed with salvaged hockey sticks, which were sanded down for a little rustic twist.

NEW HAVEN Alexion Pharmaceuticals Inc., a fast-growing company whose stock price has soared over the past five years, is returning to New Haven from Cheshire and adding hundreds of jobs, and promises to grow its workforce sharply in the next five years.
In exchange for moving more than 350 people now in Cheshire and adding between 200 and 300 employees by 2017, Alexion will be eligible for a state package worth up to $51 million in tax credits, a grant and a loan that will be partially or fully forgivable, depending on the hiring numbers.
Alexion will move into a new headquarters at a key location in the Elm City, near Yale-New Haven Hospital and the Yale School of Medicine, on College Street, on land now occupied by a below-grade highway spur.
A 426,000 square-foot building with street-level retail and a parking garage of at least 600 spaces, costing approximately $100 million, would open in June 2015 under the agreement. The developer is Winstanley Enterprises, whose largest office is across the street.
With Tuesday's announcement, Alexion becomes the fourth company in the governor's Governor Dannel P. Malloy's First Five program, designed to give large aid packages to businesses adding at least 200 jobs and it becomes a linchpin in New Haven Mayor John DeStefano's plans to redevelop the medical center area in a pedestrian-friendly way.
It is also part of the state's push to support the biotech industry, which Malloy is making into a signature issue. Alexion has entered the market with one drug so far, developed through biologics rather than chemicals, and has a pipeline of five other drug candidates, all designed to treat ultra-rare, life-threatening diseases.
"We need to build an industry we already have a foothold in," Malloy said Tuesday morning, as he announced Alexion's move and expansion.
Alexion was founded in New Haven's Science Park development 20 years ago by Dr. Leonard Bell, a Yale medical professor who is still the company's CEO. The company went public in 1997, and moved to Cheshire in 2000.
It is outgrowing its three buildings in Cheshire, even after repeated additions. In the past five years, it has added about 150 workers there.
Bell, who graduated from Yale's medical school and lives in Woodbridge, said: "Moving here to New Haven is like a homecoming."

CAPE CORAL, Fla.- An early morning fire ripped through a Cape Coral home, destroying the building. Ithappened at 814 El Dorado Parkway East.
Neighbors credit the quick thinking of a newspaper delivery woman for saving nearby homes from also going up in flames.
Brandy Ferguson says it was a normal morning at work delivering the News-Press, when she noticed something was wrong.
"Isaw black smoke billowing from the house across the street," she said.
The house was engulfed in flames and black smoke, and she couldn't reach the door. She says she frantically woke the neighbors.
"We heard a big bang on the door and hollered and she said the house is on fire!" said neighbor Laura Caldwell.
Rita Sieber's brother Donald Chappelear and his partner are seasonal residents who live here. They weren't home at the time of the fire. The past four years, she says, they poured their savings into remodeling the property.
"Totally devastated. These two have done such extensive remodeling this was going to be their retirement home," said Chappelear's mother Frances Wolford.
The fire marshalsays the house is a complete loss, suffering about $200,000 worth of damages from smoke and water.
Neighbors are calling Ferguson a hero for her quick thinking. "She saved my house, and unfortunately couldn't save the other one but saved us," said Caldwell.

CHESTER, England--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
In the current economic climate, many homeowners are looking for new ways to save money. For many turning to home improvements and eco friendly alternatives as a way to save money and invest in the home is the perfect way of economising. UKFlooringDirect.co.uk features an eclectic range of eco friendly flooring choices which will not only look good but reduce carbon footprint too.
The diverse range of solid wood, engineered wood and laminate flooring products offered at competitive prices at UK Flooring Direct are a popular choice amongst homeowners who wish to save money on their home improvements but it is the eco friendly alternatives which are favoured amongst homeowners looking to help the planet.
The wide range of cork and bamboo flooring choices available at UK Flooring Direct provide homeowners with plenty of choice when it comes to decorating their homes. Both are perfect for eco friendly homes and both will contribute towards a greener planet.
Bamboo flooring is a great alternative to timber flooring. A fast growing grass, bamboo is truly sustainable. Its short growing cycle and quick maturity mean that it can replenish itself much faster than wood. It matures in 3 to 5 years as opposed to the 40 to 60 years that it takes oak to mature.
Both strong and durable, bamboo flooring is available in a range of styles which can become striking and eye-catching in any home. Whats more, unlike solid wood flooring, it is not susceptible to shrinking or expanding and thus, will not cause problems after installation.
Cork flooring, like bamboo, is a renewable flooring material which is synonymous with green interiors. Made from recycled materials, cork flooring is typically made from cork bottle stoppers but this does not change its real beauty.
Cork floor creates a smooth, warm surface which has far higher thermal and acoustic materials than conventional foam. It is perfect for kitchens as it has a similar resiliency as carpet.
UK Flooring Direct offers its eco friendly flooring alternatives at competitive prices too, music to the ears of homeowners who continue to feel the squeeze. Visit the site to find out more about the benefits and prices of eco friendly floors from UKFD.
