The IndigoGarden DistrictHotel, which has been closed since 2008 after the economic devastation of Hurricane Katrina will be installing theThermolite Window Systemto mitigate noise and prevent its windows from being destroyed byhurricane winds.
The Thermolite Window System installation will begin in June 2012 and will be installed on the inside of thehotelas a supplement to its existing windows to help fortify the building from damage caused by window breakage and implosion as a result of hurricane winds.
Hotelmanagement was looking for a way to reduce noise transmission from room to room and also to protect the building--but want to make sure that any work didnt change the architectural look and feel of thehotel, stated Therm-O-Lite Inc. President Steve Champlin. The Thermolite Window System is a great fit for thehotelbecause we are able to reduce the noise levels, provide piece of mind, reduce their energy consumption and the system won't change the look of the windows.
Hurricane winds can cause significant damage tohotelsand other buildings when the windows are compromised. When the windows have imploded and broken, the air pressure in the building changes and can cause structural collapse and significant damage to the building--including causing the roof to lift off--and can be deadly to building occupants.
About Therm-O-Lite Inc.

This 100% customized window system is designed to provide superior protection against bomb blast, audio espionage and hurricanes while reducing noise, sealing the building envelope and preserving historic architectural integrity. IRVINE A construction mistake that ruptured an underground gas line early Wednesday forced the evacuation of an office building and shut down a nearby road.
The Gas Company pinched off the leaking natural gas and repaired the broken plastic pipe several hours after people first reported hearing the hiss of escaping gas. Workers were let back into the building at 3101 Michelson Drive before noon, after waiting for the area to air out.
Workers wait as gas company welders go to work. Irvine officers had shut down traffic on Carlson Avenue after evacuating a nearby building due to a gas leak near the Shops at Park Place.

A construction company doing work in the area hit and ruptured the two-inch underground gas line, said Angela Fentiman, a SoCal Gas spokeswoman. Firefighters responding to a call about a hissing noise in a nearby parking lot discovered the leak around 7:30 a.m.
Carlson Avenue was closed while firefighters waited for crews to shut off gas to the area, said Capt. Marc Stone of the Orange County Fire Authority. The U.S. Bank office building and the adjacent parking structure were also evacuated.
A work crew repaired the pipe shortly before 11 a.m., but officials waited for the natural gas in the air to dissipate before letting workers return to the building. The evacuation was lifted before noon.
The gas leak is still under investigation. But Fentiman said it's a good reminder that workers both professionals and do-it-yourselfers -- should call 811 before they dig so utility companies can mark underground lines.

COLUMBUS, Ohio, June 20, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Mark Corna, president of Corna Kokosing, announced winning the contract for the new $20 million parking structure at Easton Town Center.
Corna said the Gramercy parking garage in Columbus, which will be fully completed in 2013, remains on schedule to partially open before the end of 2012.
"Easton is such a success that it is crowded all the time," said Mark Corna of Corna Kokosing. "This new parking structure will provide shoppers access to parking closer to where they want to shop."
Corna added the new garage will have 1,050 spaces, an increase of 600, plus a walking bridge connecting shoppers to Macy's. To accommodate customers and project plans, Corna said his team, based in Columbus, incorporated creative scheduling.
"We begin our concrete pours at 4:30 a.m. to avoid competing with the traffic from the people who are coming to visit Easton," Corna said.
Mike Girouard, estimator for Corna Kokosing's Gramercy parking garage project, added, "I think we bring an understanding of what it takes to work in this environment, minimizing the impact to the retail business, avoiding disruption to their operations."
Corna Kokosing was one of three contractors involved in constructing the original Easton Town Center back in 1998, and Corna is honored to be back for this newest addition to Columbus and central Ohio.
"Our relationship with Easton goes all the way back to the beginning, and we are really delighted to be involved now with the new parking garage and to continue to serve that ownership," Corna said.

Homeowners: Don't do that, do this -
June 21, 2012 by
Mr HomeBuilder
Every homeowner wants to update and improve their home. But some renovations and improvements can make a big difference in the potential resale price of a home while others don't. Here are some expert tips on the improvements you should make versus the ones you should avoid.
Let's be honest, everyone wants their own bedroom. But what makes more sense, renovate an existing bedroom or add a new one?
DON'T: Add a new master bedroom suite.
While this project might make waking up every morning a little bit easier and more enjoyable, it doesn't make as much sense from an investment standpoint.
According to Remodeling magazine's Cost Vs. Value Report 2011-12 ( 2011 Hanley Wood, LLC.), the average master suite addition cost over $106,000, but only adds $62,874 to the resale value of the home. That puts it at the bottom of Remodeling's list for return on investment along with a sunroom addition and a home office remodel. All of these projects will add to your home's resale value, just not enough to offset much more than half of their high cost.
DO: Turn an attic into an extra bedroom.
Read: Go green when renovating: Choose deconstruction over demolition
Remodeling's report estimates that an attic bedroom will set you back just over $50,000 on average. However, this additional sleeping space can add over $36,000 to your home's resale price, allowing you to recoup 72.5 percent of the cost -- a far better return on your investment
If you're planning on selling your home, your property's exterior is a potential buyer's first impression. That said, some curb-appeal improvements are more cost-effective than others.
DON'T: Overpay for a front door.

A bund on the seaward side of the vented dam left three houses damaged
It was the delay in providing a retaining wall as part of the construction of the Maravoor vented dam that caused the damage to houses, lands and a road in Padushedde area on the banks of the Gurupura river, it emerged on Tuesday.
The flash floods following heavy rains on Sunday washed away several coconut trees and other plants being grown by residents and the road they were using to reach nearby bridge on the Mangalore-Bajpe Road. People are forced to take a circuitous route via Bondel.
The water level rose in the early hours of Monday suddenly and started to flow close to the houses causing erosion of land and entered plantations and damaged the road. Residents allege that authorities did not take steps to prevent the flash floods and pointed out that blocks because of construction of the vended dam were to blame. The houses of Oswald, John Francis DSouza, and Estine DSouaza took a beating. Major damage was caused to Mr. Oswalds house. The three families were busy shifting their household articles when The Hindu visited the site on Tuesday.
Alvin DSouza told The Hindu at Padushedde that he had ancestral property of one acre with coconut palms and other plants. The plants were washed away. He said he had met zilla panchayat officials about a month ago and urged them to take precautionary steps to prevent flooding.
The Maravoor vented dam is being constructed to supply drinking water to Bajpe and surrounding areas. Construction of retaining wall to protect the houses and lands was part of the scheme. Zilla Panchayat Executive Engineer Satyanarayana told The Hindu that there was a delay in getting approval for the retaining wall. The project provided for construction of such walls wherever water pressure could be more. The area abutting the houses was identified for construction of the retention wall. The approval was secured only on May 14 and the same contractor building the vented dam was asked to build the wall as well. The officer said the houses suffered damage even before the work could begin.
Mr. Satyanarayna said a bund on the seaward side of the dam had affected free flow of water causing damage to the houses. The bund, a heap of loose earth, was created while laying apron an underground concrete structure on the seaward side that is built to ensure that sea water did not mix with the sweet water of the river when drinking water supply begins. A part of the bund was washed away.
He said officials had taken steps to ensure free flow of water by clearing the blockages. Efforts would be made to provide for a road so that Padushedde households got easy access to the Maravoor Bridge and beyond.
The three affected families were shifted to houses in Kavoor, Bondel, and Marakada. Residents were upset that they were forced to leave an area in which they had been living for decades. Who will bear our losses? asked Rufina, a niece of Mr. Oswald.

AUGUSTA -- All the tenants are now gone from a four-unit apartment building on State Street that city officials recently deemed unsafe for living.
Officials had the first three apartments vacated early last week after a codes enforcement officer concluded that the decks providing the only access to the units were unsafe.
The remaining tenants in the ground-floor apartment were told Friday to find new housing and to be out by Monday.
"We told them we didn't feel comfortable even allowing anyone on the premises with the condition of those decks," Robert Overton, the code officer, said Tuesday.
The family, which had several young children and a dog, found a new home within walking distance of their old residence, Overton said.
He said some families still might have belongings on site, but he told them to limit their visits because of the decks. He said the 11 State St. building cannot be re-occupied until the decks are repaired and inspected and until the entire building is inspected for compliance with life and safety codes.
The owner, Kenneth Ouellette, has not responded to several messages left in recent weeks at his Monmouth home phone number.
Overton said Ouellette met with him and with Augusta Fire Chief Roger Audette last week about the property. Ouellette did not say what he planned to do about the building, Overton said.

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -
It seemslike snakes areall over the place: yards, roads, porches and of course the woods.
Just this weekend a Jefferson County Sheriff's deputy chasing a suspect in the woods near Saint Vincent's East shot and killed a rattlesnake. The deputy says it was ready to strike him or his K-9.
Experts say, if you are bitten, the best thing to do is to rush to get medical help.
"In general it's always safe to come present to an emergency department for an evaluation," UAB ER Dr. Jim Galbraith said.
Galbraith says it can take four to five hours for symptoms or swelling to appear after a snake bite.
"So if you get bit by a snake, the first thing you want to do is get yourself out of the area where the snake is present. It is not advised to capture or go after to identify the snake," Galbraith said.
He says rattlesnakes, copperheads and water moccasins are typically the snakes that live in our part of the country.
Chris Patterson with CritterControl says he's going on more jobs to get snakes out of homes and yards.
"We've probably gone from having one to two jobs a month, to 20 or 30 calls a month," Patterson said.
