The public will have a say in plans for the Rock Island County Courthouse and office building, possibly through a referendum, a county official said late last week.
Rock Island County Board member Tom Rockwell, who is leading the committee investigating costs associated with housing four county buildings under one roof, said the county should take positive action and consolidate buildings, but its up to the county board what process its going to take. I fully assume that if we do take positive action, a process for public input will be taken.
The committee is considering four options:
- Build a new facility in downtown Rock Island
- Rehabilitate the courthouse, 210 15th St., and office building, 1504 3rd Ave.
- Relocate to the Quad-Cities Industrial Center, or QCIC, 350 44th St.
- Do nothing
In his opinion, Rockwell said the county cant maintain the status quo and operate the 117-year-old courthouse and 113-year-old office building the old Modern Woodmen building without significant repairs to bring them up to even minimum code requirements.
I havent seen everyones recommendation, he said. But thats not going to be mine.
Each of the six members of the committee will make his own recommendation, and Rockwell will compile those recommendations into one report, he said. He then will present the report publically to the county board July 2.

The Church today is in great turmoil, suffering from internally self-imposed persecution and suppression of the Word, the Most Reverend Dr. Peter Akinola, a retired Archbishop and Primate of Anglican Church of all Nigeria, said on Sunday.
Most Rev. Akinola said it was unfortunate that in recent times, the body of Christ had been turned into a body of crises.
"Work of the Ministry has been made much more difficult over the years for the leadership of the Church by fellow servants of God, he stated.
When we turn every church service into a fund-raising event, every sermon is about money, when we feed the people with theological jargon and not the spiritual milk for their nourishment, we must be aware that the Lord, the Owner of the flock is watching."
In a sermon at the consecration of Venerable Dr. Daniel Silvanus Mensah Torto in Accra, Most Rev. Akinola said the Church was facing external aggression by militant Islamists and acute materialism.
Venerable Mensah Torto, was consecrated by the Most Rev. Dr. Justice Ofei Akrofi, whom he would succeed as the Ninth Anglican Bishop of Accra, when he retires on October 29, after attaining 70 years.
Most Rev. Akinola said the Church today, however, needed loving, humble and selfless bishops, pastors and teachers; who would not be wolves to devour the sheep, but lead them to greener pastures to feed, seek the lost and up-lift the weak.
He noted, "Within our own global Anglican Communion, the Church has been suffering painful divisions and fragmentation, and has been weakened by controversies surrounding heretical challenge to faithful Biblical Orthodoxy, and denial of the basic tenets of the faith."

Three churches from the Douds community gathered for a service at Mt. Moriah Church /KTVO's Tess Hedrick
DOUDS, IOWA -- Its been a tradition for more than 60 years; Douds Field Day is the main fundraiser for the unincorporated town.
Douds has a community club which takes care of all the towns financial needs including paying for street lights.
This years field day included a pancake breakfast, a parade and various kids activities.
Sunday morning the communitys three churches came together at the historical Mount Moriah Church for breakfast and a service culminating this years field day.
Attendees of the service said the church is very special.
There's been a church on this site since the statehood -- Iowas statehood in 1846 -- the first church was of log construction and in 1867 they built a brick church here; it didn't survive a windstorm in 1891 and 1892 and this church here was built in 1892, said Jon Finney, Douds Historical Preservation Association.
Douds Historical Preservation Association has spent $50,000 in the churchs restoration since they acquired it in 1997.

St. Aedan's Catholic Church in Jersey City celebrated the parish's centennial year today with a special Mass that drew some 600 people.
Retired Assistant Bishop Dominic Marconi was the celebrant for the Mass, which also marked the churches around the globe celebrate the birth of St. John the Baptist.
McGinley Square at Bergen Avenue and Montgomery Street, a block from where the church is located, is named for the Rev. Roger McGinley, the church's first pastor.
McGinley started a school at the church and also presided over the construction of the new church building at 800 Bergen Ave.
The Rev. Charles Grandstrand, a former pastor at the church, told the congregation today that "Aedan" means "warmth" and/or "fiery." "We are here today to give thanks to all the women and men who for 100 years who have made this their parish and community their warm spiritual home and who were on fire with the love of Christ," Grandstrand said.
St. Peter's College took over operations of the church last July. The church is now named "St. Aedan's, the St. Peter's College Church."
The Rev. Vincent Sullivan is the administrator at the church for the Jesuit college.
"It's a wonderful celebration for the parish," Sullivan said after today's service. "A number of people who have moved on to other places came back to the parish for the celebration. It was a wonderful parish -- and still is."
Sullivan estimated that a total of 900 people attend the church's six Masses every weekend.

Auckland Art Gallery Wins International Award
Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tmaki has won the International Award for Architectural Excellence from The Royal Institute of British Architects the first time a New Zealand building has won.
The awards, the winners of which were announced last Thursday, are given to only 12 buildings a year and recognise some of the worlds most imaginative, dramatic and green buildings. Other winners in 2012 include the worlds tallest building, the Guangzhou Finance Centre. From this round of winners, a visiting jury will select the winner of the prestigious Lubetkin Prize.
Gallery director Chris Saines said, We set out to develop a world class gallery and FJMT+Archimedias elegant and considered design has been instrumental to achieving that goal. Judged on the response of the near 600,000 visitors to date, this heritage restored and expanded building has become a flag-bearer for the citys architectural and urban design future.
The development of Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tmaki was commissioned and project managed by Auckland Council and included a series of emblematic, sculpted tree-like canopies cut from massive Kauri trees that enclose the forecourt, atrium and gallery areas.
This international award comes within a month of the gallery also winning the supreme award, the New Zealand Architecture Medal, at the New Zealand Architecture Awards and the highest accolade as the countrys top commercial property development for 2012 at the annual Property Industry Awards.
Projects such as this reflect the Mayors vision to make Auckland the worlds most liveable city and are a strong benchmark for other developments and transformations in the City Centre planned by Auckland Council as part of the City Centre Master Plan.

23-06-2012 19:54 This video was intended to go over door strap maintenance, but ended up being a continuation of the previous power window repair shot a couple of weeks ago. In this video, I detail how to fasten the new plastic regulator jaw to the regulator arm as well as replace both power window switches in the center console and door panel. This window was working properly, but was working with a non-OEM repair. Repairing it properly revealed the beginning stages of regulator jaw failure which was averted with a preemptive repair. 6/23/2012

As the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina nears, St. Bernard Parish will finally be able to celebrate the recovery of one of its greatest losses since the storm: an infrastructure of health care in the community. In early August, St. Bernard Parish Hospital will open its doors, boasting a state-of-the-art, 113,000-square-foot hospital and an adjoining 60,000-square-foot medical office building.
The facility, which has been under planning and construction for the past three years, is at 8000 W. Judge Perez Drive in Chalmette.
For Wayne Landry, chairman of St. Bernard Parishs Hospital Service District, the opening of the hospital is one of the last remaining pieces in ensuring strong economic and community recovery in St. Bernard Parish.
Since Katrina, St. Bernard has slowly been able to build back a sense of security and community, Landry said. From education to police, fire, and government, we have made strides to recover. Health care was the last remaining piece to that puzzle, and now we have that.
Chalmette Medical Center, the parishs lone hospital, flooded in Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and never reopened.
The new $90 million facility is financed through grants, tax credits and state capital outlay dollars. In November 2010, St. Bernard Parish residents backed a 10-year millage to help support the facility.
The people of St. Bernard really stepped up to make this endeavor possible, Landry said. Without that vote, we wouldnt be here today. We are fortunate that the residents recognized the need for this facility.
Landry said residents should take pride in the hospital, knowing that it was their own investment and that it is there to serve and meet the needs of St. Bernard and surrounding parishes. No longer will residents of St. Bernard have to leave the parish to find quality health care, Landry said.
Every detail, Landry said, has taken into account the needs of the patient and has been designed to maximize patient comfort and productivity of the medical staff.
The patient rooms were designed to have more of a hotel feel with details like wood panel headboards, backlit mirrors, and large windows, Landry said. We have also set workstations and tracking capabilities for the nurses and other medical staff.
