Rodriguez Shines, But Spikes Fall to Scrappers, 3-2 - June 30, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

June 29, 2012 - New York-Penn League (NYPL) State College Spikes NILES, OH - Joely Rodriguez was superb on the mound, tossing five scoreless frames to start the game, but the State College Spikes let a late lead slip away for the second night in a row as the Mahoning Valley Scrappers took a 3-2 decision on Friday night at Eastwood Field.

Rodriguez made his third start of the year his best by allowing just three hits and a walk over his tenure on the mound. The southpaw also struck out three batters, including two in his final inning of work.

State College (7-5) had to wait out a 1 hour, 14 minute weather delay before the game could begin, but jumped on the board in the third inning. Chris Diaz singled with one out and proceeded to steal second base and advanced to third on Barrett Barnes's single. Diaz then scored on a groundout by Samuel Gonzalez to give the Spikes a 1-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, State College manufactured another run. Yhonathan Barrios led off with a single and stole second base before going to third on a flyout. Jared Lakind then brought Barrios in with a groundout to make it a 2-0 Spikes lead.

Mahoning Valley (5-7) would start its comeback in the seventh inning, however. Spikes reliever Adrian Sampson, who retired the Scrappers 1-2-3 with a pair of strikeouts in the sixth inning, gave up a one-out single to Joe Wendle. Hunter Jones followed with a double down the left field line, his first hit of the series, to plate Wendle. Jones would then score on Aaron Siliga's base hit one batter later to tie the game, 2-2.

The Scrappers then took their first and last lead of the game in the eighth inning. Tyler Naquin started the frame by reaching second base on a Lakind error. After a sacrifice bunt, Charlie Valerio delivered a sacrifice fly to center field to score Naquin and make it 3-2, Mahoning Valley.

Jordan Cooper (0-1) took the loss after allowing the Scrappers' eighth-inning run, which was unearned, in his lone inning of work. Sampson, who made his professional debut on Friday, struck out four batters over two innings while allowing two runs on a total of four hits.

Jacob Lee (1-0) earned the win in relief for Mahoning Valley after retiring all eight batters he faced, four via strikeout, over 2 2/3 innings. Lee took over for Scrappers starter Jake Sisco, whose 6 1/3 innings were the most in a single outing for a Spikes opponent on the mound. Sisco yielded both State College runs on a total of six hits and two walks.

Wendle went 3-for-4 on the game for Mahoning Valley, one night after driving in the game-winning run as a pinch-hitter.

Saturday, the Spikes finish their six-game road trip with the last of a three-game series against the Scrappers at Eastwood Field. The matchup, scheduled for 7:05 p.m., will pit State College right-hander Jake Burnette (0-1), the Pirates' seventh-round draft choice in 2011, against Mahoning Valley right-hander Luis DeJesus (0-0), whose 0.82 ERA places him among the New York-Penn League's leaders.

Governor announces cooling initiative - June 30, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

COLUMBIACOUNTY Low-income residents who have medical conditions affected by the summers growing heat, but no air conditioning, may be able to get a unit installed thanks to a yearly program from the state and federal governments.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced Friday that the states annual cooling initiative is once again available to qualified low income residents, for whom extended periods of hot weather may pose a medical emergency because of their health issues.

The initiative is funded by Washingtons Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program and administered through the NYS Homes and Community Renewal agency, which has set aside $3 million from the federal LIHEAP funds which also provides heating assistance during the winter months for the air conditioner program.

The late spring and early summer, said Cuomo, have already brought several heat waves, which can be life-and-death matters for New Yorkers with serious medical conditions.

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer also expressed support for the program. I strongly urge eligible families and seniors to take advantage of this program, he said, to help keep their homes safe and comfortable.

Locally, it will be administered by the nonprofit organizations Columbia Opportunities, Inc., and Community Action of Greene County, Inc.

Columbia Opportunities Executive Director Tina Sharpe said Friday eligibility is determined by three criteria the household must meet the LIHEAP low-income guidelines; at least one member must be diagnosed with a chronic or acute medical condition which would be aggravated by extreme heat conditions; and there must be written documentation from a doctor that air-conditioning assistance is critical to prevent a heat emergency.

Sharpe also explained that the funding is not for households that already have a working air conditioner, or which have received one from the state either from an earlier round of HCR funding or the states NYSERDA funding.

Sharpe said the purpose of the initiative is not to cool an entire residence, but provide a safe zone for the party needing it. Were not trying to air condition the whole apartment, she said.

Its to create a cool space in the home of a low-income person that has a medical condition, Sharpe said, adding that the zone is usually the bedroom.

On the Market: Five Cool Roof Decks to Brave the Coming Heat Wave - June 29, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Friday, June 29, 2012, by Rob Bear

With nearly half the country set to be blanketed by 100+ temperatures, this weekend is looking like a scorcher. What better time to enjoy a roof deck? Well, there are probably plenty of better times, but for those hearty souls who don't mind a horrible sunburn, here are five of the best private roof decks on the market. This first rooftop escape comes from the Brooklyn neighborhood of DUMBO and is part of the borough's most expensive listing, the $19M penthouse at 1 Main Street. Featured on Selling New York, the apartment has been through a few brokers without, well, selling, but certainly has plenty going for it. Situated in the building's clocktower, the penthouse has views through the clock of the Manhattan skyline and bridges, three bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, and a private elevator to access all three levels.

Not surprisingly, the best rooftop decks are often part of a city's most expensive listings. Take this swimming pool, perched atop the townhouse at 74 Beacon Street in Boston. The house, currently listed for $14.95M, was designed by noted Boston architect Asher Benjamin in 1828, but has been updated to incorporate modern sensibilities, like a rich person's desire to have a swim and a view of the Boston skyline at the same time. With six bedrooms, six baths, and 8,450 square feet of luxury interiors, the rest of the house is nothing to shrug at either.

Compared to the cities of the northeast, where space is at a premium, the mansions of South Florida rarely feature roofdecks. After all, who needs the space on top when there are broad lawns and ground-level patios to enjoy. Well, apparently there's at least one owner who wasn't satisfied without a rooftop to lounge on. Listed for $19.5M, the vaguely-Mediterranean mansion in Highland Beach, Fla. measures almost 20,000 square feet, with eight bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, guest house, dock, and stunning views of both the ocean and the intracoastal waterway.

County announces construction amnesty program - June 29, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

If you've gotten work done on your home without obtaining the necessary permits or submitting it for inspection, now is the time to come clean, penalty-free.

From July 1 through September 30, homeowners who have skirted the rules are encouraged to participate in an amnesty program.

Homeowners in unincorporated Clark County will pay normal fees for permits, inspections and plan reviews, but will not be charged penalties.

Fees for residential-related construction projects range from $150 to $400. The Building Department's Permit Application Center is located at 4701 W. Russell Road.

"This initiative gives homeowners the opportunity to come forward to address and resolve any repair work in their home that requires permits and inspections," said Clark County Commission Chair Susan Brager. "The goal of the program is to not penalize homeowners but to ensure that any repair or remodeling work done at their residence is safe and built to code."

The most common projects on residential properties done without necessary permits include garage conversions, room additions, patio covers and water heater installations.

Kangaroo & Kiwi's pre-opening celebration is a promise of good things to come - June 29, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

On Thursday, June 28, the Kangaroo & Kiwi Pub in the Old Carnegie Library opened its doors for a small pre-opening party hosted by pub owner Bradley Howe (pictured) and building owners Karoline Morrison and Dennis Beals. The event was a chance for community members to get a taste of what's to come: delicious foods, authentic Aussie and Kiwi culture, and lots of fun.

On Thursday, June 28, the Kangaroo & Kiwi Pub in the Old Carnegie Library on N.W. Market Street opened its doors for a small pre-opening party hosted by pub owner Bradley Howe and building owners Karoline Morrison and Dennis Beals.

The event was a chance for community members to meet the pub owner, sample some of Melinda Sims' delicious creations, and see the remodeling of the 3000-square-foot groundfloor space that formerly housed Carnegie's French restaurant and stood empty for well over a year.

Morrison first announced the new tenant in January and she's as excited now as she was then.

"I think it's going to be a great change for Market Street," she said. "It's something completely new for the building."

Morrison put to rest some of the public's concern about moving a pub into an historic building by stating, "Brad has done the interior in a way that it can be completely turned back into being an old library. The old shelves are still in the basement!"

The Kangaroo & Kiwi Pub is Seattle's only exclusively Aussie and Kiwi Pub that has been bringing the authentic taste and culture of down under to Seattle for the past 11 years. They offer all the "pub classics from down under" including steak pie, split pea soup, sausage rolls, and of course, vegemite sandwiches. They also carry imported beers and screen rugby, cricket, and soccer matches on their 'tellies'. Originally from Australia, owner Bradley Howe has been a Ballard resident for twenty years but waited to open up his pub in Ballard until the right place came along. The Old Carnegie Library is that place.

"It's unique, and in the heart of Ballard," Howe said. "When I had a chance to look at it, I walked in and knew right away what I was going to do and where everything was going to go."

"It reminds us of home," Brad's niece and head of the kitchen, Melinda Sims, chimed in.

Sims explained that in Australia the pub is the center of the community and you'll often find pubs in old buildings.
