Salesforce backs out of Mission Bay campus - February 28, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

A plan to build 2 million square feet of office and retail space in Mission Bay as a headquarters for tech giant Salesforce has been suspended, a company spokesman said Monday.

Rapid growth within the company was said to be the main reason for the delay.

Salesforce, a cloud computing company, said in a statement it added 500 more employees in the past year, far exceeding expectations.

The company also said plans to continue hiring locally and globally. An estimated 3,000 employees are based in The City, and Salesforce expects that to grow to 5,000 in the next few years.

That growth, the company said, is one reason Salesforce signed an 18-year, $339 million lease for 400,000 square feet of space at 50 Fremont St. in downtown. But now the company said it likely needs more space as it continues to grow.

“It is clear to us that our original Mission Bay strategy may not provide enough space and flexibility for our needs,” the company said. “This means we are suspending development on our Mission Bay campus and instead focusing on further expansion of our downtown San Francisco campus.”

The Mission Bay campus, which was approved in January, called for construction on 14 acres within the Mission Bay redevelopment zone. Residential housing in Mission Bay is still slated to continue, and UC San Francisco’s hospital complex is progressing toward its 2014 completion date.

Though Salesforce would have been a major component of Mission Bay, Mayor Ed Lee’s office -- which has been a big supporter of luring tech companies to San Francisco -- said it’s committed to working with the company.

“They’re a rapidly expanding high-tech company,” mayoral spokeswoman Christine Falvey said. “They’re a company people look at when others try to figure out where to headquarter. The mayor is committed to working with them in downtown and in Mission Bay.”

Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation Announces Energizing Taliesin WestTM Initiative - February 28, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, in conjunction with energy efficiency consultant Big Green Zero, today announced the launch of Energizing Taliesin West™, a pioneering initiative integrating sustainable energy at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West in Scottsdale, Ariz. To kick off the initiative, the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation has partnered with First Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR - News), one of the world's leading solar companies, to install a 250 kW (AC) solar photovoltaic (PV) array at Taliesin West.

Energizing Taliesin West™ is a groundbreaking effort to transform the entire National Historic Landmark Taliesin West site into a “net zero” energy customer, producing as much energy as it consumes annually, while maintaining the historic and architectural integrity of the site. The comprehensive endeavor will focus on the twin goals of maximizing Taliesin West’s energy efficiency (through improved lighting, insulation, climate controls and other techniques) while also generating clean renewable energy on-site.

Arizona-based First Solar is a premier provider of complete solar PV systems, and has developed and installed some of the largest and most noteworthy solar projects in the world. Approximately 4,000 of the company’s sleek, black solar modules will generate clean electricity for Taliesin West, helping it achieve the goal of becoming a net-zero energy consumer. As part of its commitment to the local communities where it operates, First Solar, with help from several key suppliers, is donating the complete custom-designed ground-mounted solar PV system.

The panels will not be visible from anywhere in the historic core of Taliesin West, nor will tour guests be able to see the panels from any location during their entire tour experience – maintaining the historic integrity of Frank Lloyd Wright’s desert home and studio. However, intentionally, guests will be able to see the impressive solar array from the road before they arrive at Taliesin West to take their tour – celebrating the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation’s commitment to sustainable energy. Every year, more than 100,000 tourists come to Scottsdale to experience Taliesin West, which also houses the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture.

“I couldn’t be more excited about this partnership with Big Green Zero and First Solar,” said Sean Malone, CEO of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. “This is an extraordinary opportunity; the goal of making a world-famous National Historic Landmark site entirely self-sustaining is unprecedented. And we’re going to make it happen. The endeavor will have a broad and deep impact for sustainability efforts throughout America and across the globe. And, importantly, the initiative is entirely consistent with the values of Taliesin West: innovation, an evolving site, embracing new technology, celebrating nature and strategic use of resources.”

“Frank Lloyd Wright is synonymous with innovation in architecture and design, and we share the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation’s passion to forward his legacy – by integrating sustainable energy into his work,” said Larry Whittet, First Solar project manager for the Taliesin West solar project. “Taliesin West is a global architectural landmark that has captivated the imagination of visitors for 75 years, and we are proud to be part of this historic undertaking,”

The Energizing Taliesin West program was initiated after a recent energy assessment by Big Green Zero. The assessment indicated that Taliesin West’s energy bills could be reduced by as much as 51 percent through simple conservation methods. In addition, the property has potential to achieve a “Big Green Zero” by producing as much renewable energy as it uses each year.

“The Foundation is proud to announce First Solar as a partner in achieving our sustainability goals,” said Robert Roth, Ph.D., CEO of Big Green Zero. “As a local company focused on harnessing Arizona’s most abundant natural energy source – the sun – First Solar will provide Taliesin West with state-of-the-art solar panels in order to reach the property’s goal of producing as much energy as it consumes.”

“This year marks the 75th anniversary of Taliesin West,” adds Malone, “a perfect time to focus on the future. Energizing Taliesin West does just that – it celebrates the future of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, and our future as a society.”

Finland firm looking at joint ventures for ship design, operation software - February 28, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Bangalore, Feb. 26:

The Finland-based ship design software company Napa (Naval Architectural PAckage) is looking for joint ventures and business partnerships from Indian engineering companies to provide basic services in ship design and ship operation software in the country.

The Finnish company writes software solutions for shipyards and ship operators for design and operation of ships and works on safety and energy efficiency of vessels.

Talking to Business Line recently, Mr Juha Heikinheimo, President of the Napa group, observed that most shipyards in India were present in the latter part of the process and “we can provide initial assistance in a joint venture.”

    Three stages

Ship design and ship building is done in three stages - conceptual, basic and detailed – and according to Mr Heikinheimo, most Indian shipyards work on the detailed design and operations segment while work in the conceptual and basic levels are outsourced.

“There is a growing marine industry in India and we have a lot of potential customers.

According to Mr Heikinheimo, the fuel consumption of ships would reduce by about eight per cent on using Napa's solutions and several companies were now beginning to realise the benefits of this and, hence, sees a huge opportunities in the Indian market as well for their solutions.

Napa has a presence in India — the country serves Indian entities such as Mazagaon Dockyard, Bharti Shipyards and L&T in designing and building naval and commercial vessels and also has an establishment here from where it provides ship design services to its global customers.

    To increase workforce

Mr Heinkinheimo said that Napa plans to increase its workforce in India in a move to develop India as its global platform to provide its ship design solutions. It intends to hire from top notch naval architecture universities here, he said.

Napa's largest customer base is Korea, followed by Japan and China, and with India providing a good geographical location, “it won't be long distances to neighbouring countries so we have plans to develop India as global base to other commercial areas,” Mr Heikinheimo said.

Balki’s back! Bronson Pinchot has Pa.-based home restoration show - February 28, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

HARFORD, Pa. — For more than a decade, Bronson Pinchot has spent much of his downtime in the picture-book Pennsylvania hamlet where he found a dream home far from the stressful clamor of New York or L.A.

Pinchot likely remains best known as the endearingly naive, quasi-Mediterranean immigrant Balki Bartokomous from the TV sitcom “Perfect Strangers.” But unlike Balki, Pinchot is by his own admission “fiercely private” and an “introvert that does a pretty convincing performance as an extrovert.”

Still, he has decided to open his doors to America via “The Bronson Pinchot Project,” which premiered Feb. 11 on the DIY Network. In all, eight episodes were shot over 13 weeks at the end of last year in Harford, a village founded in 1790 and nestled in the Endless Mountains of Susquehanna County near the New York state line.

His filmography includes 1980s hits like “Risky Business” and “Beverly Hills Cop,” but since “Perfect Strangers” ended in 1993 after eight seasons, Pinchot has performed on and off-Broadway, appeared in touring theatrical productions and done voiceovers and audiobooks.

His new show, though, is altogether different.

First, the designs are his own. “I get a kick out of it because I sit there with a sketchbook and say, ‘This is what it should look like when it’s done’ and in the end it either looks like that or it’s better,’ ” he said. “My theater training helps; in theater, it doesn’t matter where you’re at with your performance, opening night is opening night.”

Home base is Pinchot’s circa 1840 mansion in the center of Harford, a town of about 1,300 people. It was the home of state Sen. Edward Jones in the early 1900s and had more recently served as office space. Pinchot bought the place in 2000.

“I wanted a Greek Revival house within five driving hours of New York City,” Pinchot said. When he first walked in, he said, he knew he would buy it.

When he arrived, the scene couldn’t have been better staged by a Hollywood set designer: The house smelled of cinnamon toast, the air outside smelled of fresh manure, a woman pushing a baby carriage paused to admire a neighbor’s fuchsia roses across the street.

“I was already sold, but that was like God was hitting me over the head with a sledgehammer,” he said. “OK, I get it, I get it!”

He now owns six historic properties in Harford, including what was a burned-out vacant home also from around 1840 and a sweet blue-shingled building that houses the town’s post office. Eventually, he hopes many of the properties will be places for visiting friends to stay.

The first season’s architectural stars are his Ionic-columned mansion and Decker House, a smaller home rehabbed with salvaged wood from demolished old buildings, windows from an abandoned farmhouse and floors from a property formerly part of late heiress Doris Duke’s estate.

Not only is “The Bronson Pinchot Project” a show about historic restoration, it’s a love letter to his adopted hometown.

“Harford is to be seen through my lens, which is that it’s heaven on earth,” he said. “None of this ‘big fish in a little pond.’ No. We’re not doing ‘Green Acres.’ ”

Pinchot, 52, an antiques collector and enthusiast of classical art and architecture since childhood, is a hands-on renovator who employs local carpenters and craftspeople; many are slated to appear in the show.

Years of trial and error have culminated into the current style viewers will see taking shape — a blend of English regency and American high country along with 19th-century plaster casts of ancient Greek sculpture and architectural flourishes. The goal is for rooms to look like they’ve taken shape over many decades, he said.

His earliest home rehab forays involved getting all the period details and furniture just right. But it felt wrong.

“I looked around and thought, ‘Well now all it’s missing is a docent and a leaflet that says where the cafe is,’ ” he said. “I made a little museum and that’s not what I want.”

Things you won’t see in Bronson world: kitchen appliances. Refrigerators — which Pinchot calls “unacceptably, unforgivably ugly” — ovens, dishwashers and microwaves are cleverly concealed behind salvaged wainscoting, cupboards and cabinets mounted clandestinely on hinges, like a bookcase hiding a castle’s secret passageway.

All of his properties eventually will get the full “Bronsonian” treatment, a process shaped both by the availability of salvage materials and Pinchot’s own improvisational approach to renovating.

“I hope we can do this for 10 seasons!” he said. “We could do an episode on every room.”

Nahhas bitter about being forced to resign - February 28, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

BEIRUT: Outgoing Labor Minister Charbel Nahhas seized the opportunity at a handover ceremony at the Labor Ministry Monday to take aim at Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun, expressing bitterness over the way he was forced to resign.

Nahhas was replaced last week by retired judge Salim Jreissati after opting to resign rather than sign a controversial Cabinet decree approving the transportation allowance. He admitted differences with Aoun at the ceremony during which he handed over the Labor Ministry to Jreissati. Both Nahhas and Jreissati were nominated by Aoun, whose Parliamentary Change and Reform bloc is represented by 10 ministers in Prime Minister Najib Mikati’s 30-member Cabinet.

In a speech on the occasion, Jreissati also pledged to carry out change in the Labor Ministry within the country’s ruling sectarian political system.

Nahhas’ resignation and his replacement by Jreissati have led to the resumption of Cabinet sessions after a month-long hiatus following a dispute between Mikati and ministers from Aoun’s bloc over the transportation allowance decree and civil service appointments.

The Cabinet met Monday for the first time since Mikati suspended its sessions on Feb. 1 following the rift with Aoun’s ministers over the appointments of Christians to key posts in the public administration.

Before the handover ceremony, Nahhas briefed Jreissati on some of the ministry’s projects that have been accomplished and other projects that have yet to be carried out.

“Your Excellency, Mr. Salim Jreissati, the legal labor minister, I hand you today symbolically the Labor Ministry in the Lebanese Republic, while I walk out of an experiment of two years and three months in two successive governments. I hand you the torch after performing my duty in this respect, hoping that you will develop what I had tried to develop,” Nahhas said in a speech during the ceremony, attended by the ministry’s senior officials and advisers.

“I have begun this experiment and stayed in it, thanks to Michel Aoun’s support but I finished it in disagreement with him,” Nahhas said. He added that serving as the telecommunications minister in former Prime Minister Saad Hariri’s Cabinet and the labor minister in Mikati’s Cabinet did not change his convictions and principles.

“Rather, [the ministerial post] allowed me to sense the arrogance of the arrogant [people] and the weakness of the oppressed, which made me cling more to my convictions and principles and that one should not be neutral between the oppressor and the oppressed,” Nahhas said.

He said he had refused to sign the transportation allowance decree because it was “based on an unconstitutional Cabinet decision” and because it was proposed by the prime minister who is not the appropriate side to do so.

“The decree clearly and publicly violated the law and because it was unjust for all Lebanon’s workers, depriving them of LL3 trillion in end-of-service compensations,” Nahhas said.

Nahhas has been at the center of a political storm since last month, when he refused to sign a Cabinet decree officially approving a transportation allowance, arguing that it should be ratified by Parliament first. However, he did sign the decree containing the Cabinet’s decision to raise the minimum wage.

Aoun has also admitted differences with Nahhas. He told reporters last week that he had reached an agreement with Speaker Nabih Berri to legalize the transportation allowance decree, but Nahhas’ “circumstances might not allow him to cooperate with us.”

Aoun was reported Monday to have criticized Nahhas’ performance during meetings with his supporters. Al-Joumhouria newspaper quoted Aoun as telling FPM members: “We named him [a minister] after we removed the dust from him. No doubt, he is [an educated man], but he wanted to show off and take us wherever he wants instead of us taking him to where we want.”

Aoun was further quoted as saying: “Nahhas is like a plane which we downed because we did not want to fall with it. It crashed by itself and the passengers survived ... This man has stabbed us.”

In his speech, Nahhas warned Jreissati to be wary of what he called “rebellious employees and violators protected by politicians on sectarian pretexts.”

Responding, Jreissati praised Nahhas as “an extraordinary man of a national stature and intellectual and financial integrity” and promised to introduce change at the Labor Ministry. “I hope I will be able to carry out the projects he mentioned in his speech and during his private meeting with him,” he said.

“I know that there are many issues that need more social justice and that social security in Lebanon is not secured as it should.

“I know the problems of this ministry through my various reading not only from the fruitful closed meeting with him,” Jreissati said.

“I know that workers lack rights. I am aware of the competitive projects and in my country and the competition to the labor force.

“I promise you that demands for change and reform are not merely a slogan. I will seek to [carry out] change and reform within the current [political] setup,” he added.

Jreissati said he will work under one slogan: “Yes to stability, yes to calm but no to tranquility before the ambitions of this ministry have been attained.”

Payback as PM plans to cull Rudd's mates - February 28, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Chris Evans says the leadership fight will help strengthen the prime minister's authority in the public eye.

KEY cabinet ministers are in the firing line for "payback" after voting for Kevin Rudd in yesterday's leadership spill.

Assistant Treasurer and Sports Minister Mark Arbib has resigned from the Senate.

Senior government sources confirmed Robert McClelland is expected to be dumped from cabinet in a reshuffle to be announced by Julia Gillard before the end of the week.

But Immigration Minister Chris Bowen is expected to be spared.

The PM will now also be forced to find a replacement for another New South Wales ministerial vacancy created by the shock resignation of Mark Arbib.

Ms Gillard yesterday would not rule out demotions of key cabinet ministers who supported Kevin Rudd, claiming any changes would be based on merit.

Stephen Smith or Simon Crean are considered the likely candidates to replace Mr Rudd as foreign minister. However, Mr Bowen was also named as a potential promotion into the job, not only on merit but as a gesture of unity.

"The next big challenge for us is how we challenge this reshuffle," a senior source close to the PM's office said.

"You would have to think Robert has to go. She wanted to do it last time but wasn't allowed.

"The problem is, can you have any confidence in the PM's office to manage considering the disaster of the last reshuffle."

Mr Rudd yesterday prevailed on caucus not to punish his supporters.

"My final request of the leader is no retribution against my supporters," he said. "They are good Labor people, every one of them."

Trade Minister Craig Emerson will act in Mr Rudd's role until a decision about the reshuffle - and could himself be in line to take the job permanently.

A spokesman for Mr Smith, who was foreign minister under Mr Rudd said: 'This is entirely a matter for the prime minister."

Ms Gillard will continue with a divided inner sanctum with some of Mr Rudd's backers, such as Martin Ferguson, set to stay on.

Leader of the house Anthony Albanese's office confirmed he would remain in the chief parliamentary head-kicking role after Ms Gillard had refused to accept his resignation.

"I would hope Julia Gillard would want to see me continue in the cabinet," Mr Bowen said.

"But that would entirely be a matter for the prime minister of the day and I will serve in any cabinet capacity for either of them."

Mr Ferguson is considered a valuable asset to the government and said: "I will always serve the Labor Party."

It was unclear what will happen to Manufacturing Minister Kim Carr who was demoted in last December's botched reshuffle.

By retaining Ms Gillard as leader, the party avoided an exodus of ministers with Attorney-General Nicola Roxon and School Education Minister Peter Garrett declaring they would not serve as ministers if Mr Rudd was re-elected.

Treasurer and Deputy Prime Minister Wayne Swan may also have refused to serve Mr Rudd.

David Bradbury and former defence minister Joel Fitzgibbon have been named as MPs from the NSW Right who could replace Mr Arbib and Mr McClelland.
